Sandy was born on October 10, 1936 to Anson McNeill and Alice Jaques in Montclair, New Jersey. He attended Montclair Academy; Brooks School in Andover, Massachusetts; Brown University; and Upsala College in East, Orange, New Jersey. Sandy also served two years in the United States Army, including a stint at Camp Wellfleet on Cape Cod.
He launched a successful career in the insurance industry in 1961, splitting his 35-year career between The Travelers and General Re. His kind and outgoing spirit helped him foster many friendships; you might have started as a client with Sandy, but you ended as a friend. That same year he married his beloved wife, Nancy Peterson. Sandy and Nancy had met three years earlier, and were married for 62 years. They had two children, Peter Anson and Alice Jaques. Though his work required frequent travel, Sandy’s first and foremost commitment was to his family.
Sandy, Nancy and their young family relocated to Wilton, Connecticut in 1972. Though Wilton was “home,” his heart was in East Orleans, where the family spent every summer. Sandy and Nancy retired there in 1994. Sandy enjoyed playing tennis, paddle tennis, golf, skiing, and zipping around Pleasant Bay in his Boston Whaler, which was named SNAP (for Sandy, Nancy, Alice and Peter). He and Nancy loved to travel, and their adventures took them across Europe, America and Alaska.
A gracious, gregarious and convivial soul, Sandy was always quick to buy a round at the 19th hole and to invite visitors by for dinner. Anyone who knew Sandy loved to listen to his stories, often self-deprecating and always good-spirited. There was always a glint of mischief in his eyes, a passion for life and good times that was contagious.
He is survived by his wife Nancy; his daughter Alice Jaques of South Orleans; his grandsons Zachary Grant and Samuel Jaques; and his nephews William (and wife Jennifer), Anson (and wife Heidi) and Jaques (and wife Tara); and his cherished Golden Retrievers, Gossip and Ranger He was preceded by his parents, his son Peter Anson and his brother Walter Jaques. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the Friends of Snow Library PO Box 481, Orleans, MA 02653 or The Federated Church of Orleans. A memorial service will be held on September 7th at 1pm at The Federated Church of Orleans.
