Born on May 31st, 1940, in Buffalo, NY, Barbara grew up in Lyons, NY and graduated from Lyons High School. She spent many summers in Wellfleet, MA, where she would eventually settle full time.
Barbara raised her 2 sons, Mark and Stephen, in Wellfleet in a loving home. She worked as a teacher's aide at Wellfleet Elementary School, but eventually went back to school and attained her bachelor's, and masters degrees. She continued to work at Wellfleet Elementary, where she became the Technology Coordinator, as well as teaching 3rd grade for a year. She was loved by both faculty and students alike.
There was no greater joy, though, than when she became a grandmother, to Jillian and Zander. "Granin", as she was known to them, endlessly loved and adored them, not to mention spoiled them. She cherished every single moment spent with her family.
Barbara also loved all animals, but was especially fond of cats, having as many as 5 at any given time. She was a dedicated and loving cat mom, always. She greatly enjoyed volunteering at the Friends of the Plymouth Pound pet shelter. When they had to move from Hyannis to Kingston, she didn't miss a beat, and would drive there several times a week to continue her shifts.
Barbara was predeceased by her son, Mark, and her mother, Priscilla "Gaga" Walters. She is survived by her son Stephen and his wife Faith, of Yarmouthport, MA; her granddaughter Jillian of Northampton, MA; her grandson Zander of Yarmouthport, MA; her sister Priscilla "Deedee" and husband Charles, of Salem, OR; her niece Liz of Portland, OR; her niece Holly and husband Brent of West Roxbury, MA; and her beloved kitty Nugget.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in her name to Friends of the Plymouth Pound, or an animal charity of your choice. Friends of the Plymouth Pound donation info can be found on their website.
Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Mill Hill Residence, as well as Continuum Hospice, for their attentive and compassionate care over the last 7 months. Also, her dedicated caregivers/friends, Francine and Jill.
Burial will be private. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date.
