Maplewood/Brewster, on January 30, 2025. She was 82.
Jane was born on December 27, 1942, the daughter of Archibald and Rose Leitch in Brunswick,
Ohio. Her parents and two siblings, Martha and Archie, predeceased her.
Jane graduated from St Michael’s High School( Cleveland), St. Francis College (BA), and
Boston College (MA). She taught elementary school, mostly 4th and 5th grade at the Schofield,
Honeywell, and Upham schools in Wellesley. She also taught for one year at Eastham
Elementary School and another year at Orleans Middle School.
Jane was a gifted teacher who especially enjoyed teaching science and language arts.
According to her colleague, Cindy Lawrence, Jane was “ an awesome teacher, much loved by
her students and their parents.”
Jane first came to the Cape in the 70s, built a house in Eastham in 1983 and retired there in
2000. During her twenty five years of retirement she was able to pursue her many interests and
talents: watercolor painting, reading, birding, and gardening. She has always been a walker
and has gone on hiking trips in New Zealand, Patagonia, Ireland, England, British Columbia,
Tanzania, Namibia, the American West, and several in Italy.
Above all, Jane loved her West Highland Terriers, having as many as 4 at a time. Her trips
to dog shows, including Westminster, with Lisa and Lou Pacheco and Deb Sullivan, were
highlights of her life.
She and her Westie, Annie, entered many Nosework events which required much training for
both of them.
Jane leaves behind her close friend, Lucy Cookson, and her beloved nieces and nephews:
Jeanne, Lalu, and Indica Sur; Michelle and Echidna Reidy; Martha and Teddy Stevens; Tony,
Amy (Munichiello), Blake, and Tessa Reidy; Jane, Chris, Rose, and Mickey Burgett; and Melissa, Bill, and Sarah Roddy.
She also leaves her extended family, Joan Whitman and Jim Campbell; Scott, Karen, Brynne,
and Halle Whitman; Scott, Sharyn, and Ryan Hopkins; Glenn, Beth, and Braedon Reilly; and Jack Beaton as well as several wonderful friends including Mary, Di, Linda, Donna, Jane, and Darlene.
Her family and friends are grateful for the exceptional care she received at Maplewood.
An event to celebrate her life will be held later in the year.
