

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Anna, and five children: Paul of Watertown, Michael of Medford, Katherine McClure of Lyndeborough, NH, John of Framingham and Stephen of Marlborough. He was pre-deceased by a beloved son George, Dr. McGovern was very proud of his grandchildren: Camille, Christopher, Lauren, Rebecca, Meghan, and Sean.
Dr. McGovern’s homes were located in Sudbury, Lincoln and ultimately in Eastham, MA on Cape Cod.
Dr. McGovern was a graduate of Holy Cross College and Tufts Medical School. His college career was interrupted by service as a World War II army medic in France and Germany.
Following residency training in Pathology at the Carney Hospital in Dorchester and the Tufts-New England Medical Center, Dr. McGovern was appointed Chief of the Pathology Department of the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, a position he held for well over a generation. He also enjoyed his position as a Clinical Professor of Pathology at Tufts Medical, where in a happy symbiotic relationship he both taught and learned from students. He was an active participant in the activities of the Massachusetts Medical Society, serving a term as President and was President of the Natick Red Cross.
Dr. McGovern was blessed with a loving wife and family who were especially generous and helpful in his last years of declining health.
Dr. McGovern was a long-term member of the Orleans Yacht Club, earning Honorary Status at his 50th year of membership. He especially enjoyed operating the safety boat for the Sunday sailboat races. Dr. McGovern was also members of the Sudbury Bowling Club and the Thursday Afternoon Men’s Club at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Orleans.
Visiting hours will be from 4p-7p on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Wednesday, April 8th at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Orleans, MA. Burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
