August 2, 1925 – May 6, 2017
Julia Wells, 91, passed away peacefully May 6, due to complications resulting from Parkinson’s Disease.
Julia was born August 2, 1925 in Phelps, New York. She graduated from Geneseo State College in 1947 with a degree in Library Science, and moved to Plattsburgh, New York where she met her future husband, Roger Wells, at an Adirondack Mountain Club meeting. The couple moved to Stamford, CT in 1956 where they raised their four children. In Stamford, Julia was involved with Welcome Wagon, founded the Newcomers Club, and was active in the Presbyterian Church. Always interested in expanding her knowledge base, Julia made frequent trips to New York City with her husband and children to visit museums, see operas and plays and participate in cultural events. After residencies in Texarkana, TX and Leominster, MA, she and Roger moved to Mercer Island, WA where they lived for 40 years. An avid hiker, skier and camper, Julia loved the mountains and waters of the Northwest. She also volunteered many years at the Seattle Children’s Hospital, was an active participant in the Seattle Opera Guild, and held memberships in several art and theatre organizations. In addition, she managed the books for Wells Enterprises, a company founded by her husband and son.
From their first year of marriage, Julia and Roger spent summers on Cape Cod, first camping at Nickerson State Park and eventually buying a home in Orleans, where the family has continued to gather for over 50 years. Julia and Roger made lifelong friends in Orleans, and she was active in the Orleans Yacht Club, played tennis regularly and loved the ocean beaches. Julia traveled extensively around the world with Roger and also took several trips biking in Europe and driving cross country with close friends from Orleans. For many years, she and Roger spent a month each winter on the island of St John. In 2014, Julia moved to The Woodlands in Brewster.
Julia is survived by four children, Penelope of Boston, MA, Cynthia of Annapolis, MD, Kimball of Palos Verdes, CA, and Philip of Seattle, and four grandchildren, Julia and Dakota Jones and Greta and Peter Wells. She is also survived by a brother, John Harland of Seminole, FL, and two sisters, Margaret Jolliff of Cape St Vincent, NY and Sally Pooler of Port St Lucie, FL. Julia made good friends wherever she went and knew how to be a good friend herself. She was an avid reader, a renowned party planner and always keen for an adventure or new experience. Her dry wit, her practical approach to life and her endless patience were appreciated by friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the family house in Orleans. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Orleans Pond Coalition, PO Box 2485, Orleans, MA 02653, www.orleanspondcoalition.org.
