Phillip Knowles Goodwin

He was born July 13, 1934 in New York City to the late Frederick and Phyllis Goodwin. Phillip attended The Browning School (’48) in New York, Choate Rosemary Hall (’52) in Wallingford, CT and received a BA in Political Science in 1956 from Yale University where he was a proud member of the Pundits. He married the love of his life, Diana (Dinny) Tilt Goodwin, in 1960 and enjoyed a wonderful 62 year marriage.

Growing up, Phillip spent his summers in the Muskoka Lake region of Canada. Later, he and his family enjoyed their “gentleman’s farm” in Cambridge, NY. Living mostly in Ridgewood, NJ, Phillip had a 38 year career in banking with Chemical Bank and later Chase Bank. Early in his career, he also served in the well-known 107th Regiment of the NY State National Guard. His banking career took him all over the United States and Europe, before finishing as a Regional President of the New York Capital Region after he relocated to Menands, NY, outside Albany.

When the work of a “gentleman’s farm” became tiresome, Phillip and Dinny traded in the mountains for the ocean and beaches when they retired and moved to their house on Cape Cod in 1994. As a lifelong learner, Phillip was an avid reader, especially books on World War II, and he kept busy in retirement with courses at the Snow Library in Orleans, golf and social activities at Eastward Ho! in Chatham and volunteering with the Yale Club of Cape Cod. Well known for his sense of humor, Phillip loved to make people laugh and was quick with a joke, even some that were actually funny!

Phillip is survived by his wife Dinny and their two sons: Chris Goodwin (Eileen Tinney Goodwin) and Scott Goodwin (Virginia Reyna Goodwin). He is also survived by two wonderful grandchildren, Gracie Goodwin and Charlie Goodwin.

Memorial Service will be held on April 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street, Orleans, MA 02653. Burial was held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to The Snow Library in Orleans.
