
Born in 1932, he spent his youth living in Winchester, MA and spent memorable summers at a family farm in Francestown, N.H. He spent his teen summers as a St. Croix Voyageur, becoming a Junior Maine Guide and an avid outdoorsman. He passed along his love and knowledge of the Maine and New Hampshire wilderness to his son and many others. The highlight of Will's youth was his employment by the U. S. Weather Service at Resolute Bay, NWT, during the summer of 1953. Will received a BA from Bowdoin College in 1954 and a BS in Civil Engineering from MIT in 1956 and was a Registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts.
Will and his brothers, Frank and John “Cy”, founded and were professionally involved in Frank Joy, Inc, Cape Cod Ready Mix Concrete, Cape Cod Truck, Lower Cape Foundation, Bayside Disposal, and Coastal Engineering Companies. Will was CEO of Coastal Engineering from its founding in 1976 through 2004 when he sold it to key professional employees he had mentored through the years.
He was very active in the Cape Cod community, serving on a number of Town of Orleans and Cape Cod Commission Committees. He served as Chairman of the Nauset Regional High School Building Committee,where he was instrumental in the creation of the Nauset High School campus, and on the Orleans School Committee and Nauset Regional School Committee. As the first Cubmaster of Pack 72, he influenced a generation of Orleans boys.
He is survived by his best friend, loving wife, and business partner of 27 years, Page McMahan; son Mark, and his wife Susan of Holyoke, MA and daughter, Judy Joy, of Port St. Lucie, FL. He leaves a sister, Carolyn, “Cal”, Lawrence of Lexington, MA. He will be deeply missed by the two grandsons he loved so much, Matthew Joy of Holyoke, MA and Timothy Joy of W. Springfield, MA. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 30 years, Evie Alexander Joy, his brothers, Frank and John “Cy”, and a sister, Dorothy Sargent.
A Memorial Service in Celebration of Will's life will be held on Friday, September 20th at 12:00 PM at Church of the Holy Spirit, Monument Road, Orleans, MA with Reception following in the Parish Hall
