

A funeral service for Andrew F. Romano Sr., who died Tuesday, February 3, 2015, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9th at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home located at 548 North Nova Road in Ormond Beach. A viewing will be held on from 2:00-4:00p.m. Sunday, February 8th at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home located at 548 N. Nova Rd. in Ormond Beach. Andy was born December 25th, 1922 in Springfield, Massachusetts to John and Rose Romano. He lived in Springfield, MA until 1936 when his family moved to Ormond Beach, FL. He graduated from Seabreeze High school in 1940. He was called into the military in 1943 while attending the University of Florida and served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator on the C47. After the war ended in 1945, he enrolled in Stetson University and earned a degree in education. After graduating, he became a teacher for grades 5-8 at an elementary school in Barberville. His career was interrupted when he was called to serve in the Korean War. After the war, he went back to teaching and during the summers off, started the Ormond Beach Life Saving Corp in 1949. He served as captain until 1957. He also owned and operated a business renting beach chairs, floats and umbrellas for over 50 years. In 1960, he was named principal of Ormond Beach Jr. High until he retired in 1986. In 1985 he married the love of his life, Sharon, and they enjoyed many happy years together. He loved to go on cruises with Sharon, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Andy remained active in the community by serving on Ormond Beach’s Leisure Services Advisory Board and in the Ormond Beach Lion’s Club. Due to his dedication and involvement in the area the property located at 839 South Atlantic Ave. was named in his honor and dedicated as Ormond Beach’s Andy Romano Beachfront Park in February of 2013. Andy was predeceased by his brother John Romano, sisters Christine Walsh and Ella Hagar, and his wife of 29 years, Sharon. He is survived by his daughters Heidi Carhide and Traci Young, and his son Andy Romano Jr. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Samantha Carhide, Emma Young and Anthony and Nicholas Romano. Andy was loved as a husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed.
