Anna (Nana) Utter, 97, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, in Ormond Beach, Florida. Born February 17, 1929, in the Bronx, New York, and raised in Milltown, New Jersey by her beloved father, Pasquale DeMaria (Bebop). She had 3 sisters: Carmella, Jeanette, and Philomena.
Anna gave birth to five sons but mothered countless others throughout her life. She is remembered for her inclusiveness; there was always room at her table. A born caregiver, she and her late husband, Bob Utter, are renowned for fostering over 100 children.
Respected and loved by so many, Anna was a sister, mother, aunt, grandma, great-grandma and cherished friend to all who knew her.
Throughout her life Anna held strong democratic values and believed passionately in standing up for those who were underserved or overlooked. An advocate for the underdog, Anna believed deeply that every person deserved opportunity, respect, and a voice.
Beyond her convictions, Nana was known as an avid reader. She was recognized for her warmth, sharp wit, and remarkable resilience. She had a special way of noticing people others might miss and offering encouragement when it was needed most. She will be remembered with love and gratitude by all whose lives she touched.
To her family she was a steady presence of wisdom, humor, and love. She shared stories, lessons, and laughter, always reminding those around her to help others and stand up for what is right.
A celebration of her life will be held at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 North Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, on Saturday, April 4, at 1:00 pm. A fellowship will take place immediately following the Celebration of Life at the same location.
