

David was born at the start of our nation’s “Great Depression” in 1929, learning early the importance of faith and family. As a young boy he was running “The Grit” National Newspaper to WWII service men deploying at the train station in rural Alabama. He brought his earnings and tips home to help his family.
This started his love for the news print business. A profession he refined at The Southern School of Printing in Nashville, Tennessee, becoming a master in the latest printing technology: The Lyno-Type machine.
This skill carried him to many venues, from weekly newspapers, including his own publication “The Arlington Outlook” to the Jacksonville Journal and Florida Times Union, even as far as Illinois to The Chicago Tribune. His commitment to the profession had him serve as secretary and helped organize the first Typographical Union in Jacksonville, FL.
He also served his country with distinction enlisting in the Navy in 1950. He was off to Korea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex “The Fighting Ship in The Fleet” working in the print shop and editing the ship’s newspaper “The Carrier Pigeon”. Finally printing for the task force 77 then at the 5th Naval Printing Office in Norfolk, VA. David finished his printing career with the U.S. Navy Printing and Publication Office at Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL where he retired. Service to his country, commitment to his profession and dedication to faith and family were David’s corner stones in life.
As Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America Troop #272, he guided more than a handful of young men to the rank of Eagle Scout. David worked with the prison outreach and youth ministries at his church, he led by example the joy of serving God gives us victory though our Lord, Jesus Christ.
David leaves behind his wife, Ninel, brother, Ben, four children; Maryanne, David, Danny, and Victoria, five grandchildren; Megan, Nathan, Angela, Jalayna, Tamara, and four great-grandchildren; Jada, Cameron, Danny, and Lilly; many nephews and nieces will miss their “Uncle Gene”.
