Edna Rae Spencer, 90, of Ormond Beach, FL passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Preceded in death by parents Lester (Bessie) Brinlee and Bertha (Mace) McClure, brothers Wayne Brinlee and Benjamin McClure, son Michael Spencer, and great-grandson Dash Devlin.
Survived by her husband of 65 years, Donald Spencer; children Sandra (Les) Merritt, Susan (Bill) Spencer, Sherrie Spencer, Steven (Anne) Spencer, and Laura (Alex) Spencer; grandchildren Selena (Sven) Alger, Rochelle (Martin) Polsenski, Todd (Natalie) Merritt, Keith (Johnica) Merritt; and 6 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved siblings Randall (Sharon) Brinlee, Gene Brinlee, Linda Sue (Tom) Ashby, Jerry (Mona) Brinlee, Patsy (Victor) Cox, Joyce (Mike) Shurtleff; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was born April 7, 1933, in Hobart, OK, living in several states throughout her life including CA, NM, NJ, and considered Florida her home since 1962.
Hobbies included gardening, handicrafts, sewing, and she was an avid reader. The family appreciates Rae’s endless efforts researching their genealogical history; most notably, she is the great-great-great-great granddaughter of American frontiersman Daniel Boone.
Raising the family was her priority; her true joy and achievement. She volunteered extensively in the schools her children were attending. She enjoyed travel with family and friends both domestic and internationally.
She also typed over 300 manuscripts for Don’s writing career although she never let him dedicate a book to her. She was co-owner of Camelot Publishing Company working tirelessly beside her husband and thinking when they closed the business in 1990 she might be retired. This was not to be as Don continued to write books which Rae typeset until her health forced her full retirement in 2021.
Rae was a kind, loving, and selfless person who will be missed by many.
A private graveside service is scheduled for the family on Tuesday, Sept 19, at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home Ormond Beach, where she will be buried. Repast will be held at her home following the service at 1 PM, for friends to pay their respect to the family.
