

Fred Mae McCoy Ball, 91, of Ormond by the Sea, FL, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2012. She was born to the late Howard and Lilly (Stafford) McCoy, on October 19, 1920 in Burnwell, KY and described herself as a “feuding McCoy”. She married Samuel Benton Ball on October 22, 1938 in Oceana, WV and celebrated 70 years of marriage before Mr. Ball passed away in 2009. Freda and Sam raised their family just outside of Summersville, WV. During the 1950’s and 60’s, Freda was a member of the Board of Directors for the Nicholas County Memorial Park, belonged to the Farm Women’s Club, Home Demonstration Club and was a 4H Leader. In 1962, they moved to Indian Head, MD and then Alexandria, VA shortly after. Freda worked for Zayre department store and retired in 1980. In 1981 Freda and Sam moved to Ormond Beach, Florida. She loved her grandchildren and helping others. Freda served 15 years with Meals on Wheels and was a “blanketeer” for Project Linus. Over the years, she contributed over 100 handmade quilts and quillows (combination of a pillow and quilt) to comfort children in need. While in Florida, Freda belonged to the West Virginia club and served in various positions. She is survived by her daughter, Annette Davis of Port Orange, FL; two sons, Gene (Vicky) Ball of Grambrille, MD and Fred (Judy) Ball of Summersville, WV; four grandchildren, John Ware of Suffield, OH, Debra (Jim) Bailey of Montclair, VA, Steven Ball of Alma, CO and Cathy (Steve) Gump of Odenton, MD; six great-grandchildren, Timothy, Jacob, and Claire Bailey all of Montclair, VA, Erol Ozgur of Ormond Beach, FL, Sara Ozgur of Valparaiso, IN, and Alyssandra Gump of Odenton, MD. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Benton Ball of Ormond Beach, FL, sisters Bertha and Stella, brothers Milton and Thurman and her granddaughter, Brenda Grabacki of Elmhurst, IL. Compassionate Care was provided by her caregivers, Jana Murphy and Beth Kleckner. A Celebration of the Life of Freda Mae McCoy Ball will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in The Ormond Beach Chapel of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Road, with the Reverent Sheryl Sumlin-Barclay officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Road, Port Orange, FL 32129.
