Laura Annie Pierce, 83, of Palm Coast was suddenly called to be with the Lord on November 1, 2010. Plans for a memorial service at Palm Coast United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date. Laura was predeceased by her loving husband, Donald, in July 2010. Their ashes were buried together at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia on November 12, 2010.
A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, Laura joined Palm Coast United Methodist Church after relocating from Alexandria, VA to Palm Coast in 1986. Born in Stormstown, PA on November 18, 1926, she earned an Associate’s degree from Drexel Institute of Technology and began her working career in Philadelphia, PA. At the conclusion of World War II, she reunited with her childhood soul mate, Donald, and they were married in June, 1948. Thus began Laura’s 25+ year career as a US Army wife, with travel far from her rural home in Central PA to stations as distant as Japan, Germany and Hawaii. She met and made life-long friends all along the way.
Being an Army wife, raising five children and moving frequently was not enough to keep Laura occupied. She had many interests including horticulture, Bridge, volunteering her time to veterans with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, working with families in crisis and many church groups. She was an expert level flower arranger, having won an untold number of blue ribbons over the years. Her greatest love, however, was in meeting people everywhere she went.
Laura is survived by her five children, Donna Murakami, Leslie Pierce, Stephen Pierce, Elizabeth Nettuno and Polly Hoffmann. She is also survived by her four siblings, Beulah Ghaner, Wilma Kuhns, George Peters and Florence Reese. Other loving family members included eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces, nephews and in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Palm Coast United Methodist Church or VFW Post 8696 in Palm Coast, Florida. Arrangements are under the care and trust of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach. Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.volusiamemorialfunerals.com.
