

Richard E. Schafer of Ormond Beach, FL passed away on July 14, 2016, peacefully of natural causes. He was born on July 20, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. He honorably served our country in the United States Navy for 20 years achieving the rank of E8, Senior Chief (MMCS) and retired in 1977 in Orlando, FL. His career then turned towards the hospitality industry, where he worked as Head of Engineering at several locations within the state of Florida. Still missing the seas, he volunteered with the Auxillary Coast Guard for several years following his retirement from the United States Navy. He was a member of the VFW and ushered frequently at his church. He was an avid train enthusiast, always having a train board set up in his home, and had a passion for his 1986 CJ-7 Jeep Renegade. He enjoyed boating and camping with his family. He had a great sense of humor, with a handsome smile and contagious laugh that was stimulating when in the same room. Mr. Schafer is survived by his loving wife Mildred; three daughters, Pamela Freeman (Jim) of Waco Texas, Kimberly Ramsey of Vero Beach FL and Brenda Imwalle (Charlie) of Lake Mary FL; as well as his six grandchildren, Emily, CJ, Tyler, Nick, Aaron and Ryan. He was the son of Francis and Marcella Schafer of McHenry, Illinois and is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Benham (Glenn) and Diane Schwall of South Carolina.
A visitation will be held from 5- 7:00 pm Monday July 25, 2016 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach. A reception is planned at the conclusion of the visitation and will take place at Aberdeen Club House, Allwood Green Blvd, Ormond Beach.
A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for Tuesday July 26, 2016 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Ormond Beach, FL
