BENT, Arthur Gerald (Jerry) -- Peacefully passed away on Friday, May 28, 2021 at St. Catharines General Hospital, Palliative3 Care Unit in his 88th year, surrounded by his loving wife, five children and one grandson. Born in Oshawa, Ontario he was the youngest child of the late Alma and Percy Bent. Employed by General Motors for 32 years, Jerry retired at 49 years to begin a new business as "The Affordable Handyman" in the Durham area. Retirement from his second career was in 1999 followed with services provided to St. Vincent's Kitchen (Durham Outlook for the Needy).
Beloved husband of Mary Frances for 45 years, proud and loving father to Geri-Lynn, Allan and Joanne. He was also a devoted and loving step-father to Rick (Sheri) Peeler and Laura Brady. He is fondly remembered by grandchildren Teala (J.P.), Dann, Allanah, Alisha, Devin (Jen) and Justin (Chantelle). His precious great-grandchildren are Tristan, Taylor, Keelan, Mariah, Kailey, Izabella, Scarlett and Emilia.
Family was extremely important to Jerry and having his three children and Mary's two children stand up for their marriage in 1976 was a beautiful milestone. Carrying out his dream of building an attached indoor "Tropical Room" to the family home in Oshawa brought great delight to many future family gatherings for the full 12 months of the year. It contained a heated swimming pool complete with slide, hot tub and dining area so the winters "were a blast" as fondly echoed by the grandchildren. Jerry's "handyman talents" were passed on beautifully to his children, yes even his daughters. As time passed it became evident to the youngest son Rick (and Sheri) to lend a hand and extend part of their home in Niagara Falls to fit their needs. Jerry relished the deserved attention which prepared us all for COVID-19. Love and kindness was not hard to take at such a time. Prior to these times, Jerry enjoyed many hours on the computer planning future "CRUISING TRIPS" and was very grateful when each cruise was taken. He also dearly loved many trips to Nova Scotia when his wife Mary shared her roots and relatives. The kitchen/dining room seemed to be his favorite place everywhere he went.
Jerry was pre-deceased by his sister Bernice (Len) Yuill and his four brothers; Jack, Harold (Doris), Bob and Ken. He is survived by sisters-in-law Millie and Alice. His son-in-law Bob Wilson also pre-deceased him.
Very Special thanks is extended to Jerry's Doctors, especially Dr. Kelada-Sedra and his pharmacist Simon Boulis. The care provided at St. Catharines General Hospital was exceptional in every way. Special thanks goes out to LHIN services for their dependable devotion. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place when COVID-19 restrictions are better. In Jerry's memory, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made through www.oshawafuneralhome.com.
