With heavy hearts we announce the passing of William David Winter on June 1, 2025, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Bill was born on October 18, 1923 and is predeceased by his parents Doris and Gardner Winter, cherished wife and sweetheart Helen Beamish, sisters, Kay (Bob Walker deceased), Dorothy (Everett Quantrill deceased), Isabell (Murray Wilson deceased) and brother Dick (Mae Winter deceased). He is survived by his sister Joyce Forsyth (Hugh deceased) and by adult children Elizabeth Ranson (Jim), David Winter (Lorie), Catherine Smith (Neil) and Nancy Stirling (Neil deceased), 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Bill dedicated his life to building - both in the literal and deepest sense. As a skilled stone mason and respected builder, he left his mark on countless homes, schools, industrial projects and churches throughout the community. But beyond bricks and mortar, Bill built relationships, integrity and a legacy of mentorship. He generously shared his knowledge with younger tradespeople, always taking the time to teach with patience and pride.
A proud Rotarian for over 50 years, Bill believed deeply in service above self. His unwavering faith guided everything he did, from his work to his volunteerism to his everyday kindness. Whether administering his business, lending a hand to his family, or sitting quietly in church, Bill lived out his values with quiet strength and humility.
Bill along with his wife Helen, was the proud owner of his construction company, which he ran with integrity, skill and a deep commitment to quality. For decades he served his community through honest work, trusted craftsmanship, and a reputation built on word of mouth. Their business wasn’t just a livelihood - it was a reflection of their shared values, work ethic, and pride in doing the right thing the right way.
For more than seventy-eight years, Bill and Helen held various leadership positions at St. Mark’s United Church, which was like a second home for him and Helen. They married there in 1947, their children, many grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were baptized there, and St. Mark’s officiated weddings for several of their descendants.
Bill held roles as Steward, Senior Sunday School teacher, Elder, and Trustee for many years. He had exceptional knowledge of the sanctuary and oversaw many upgrades including installing an elevator and constructing a now-unneeded manse on King Street in Whitby.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Bill’s caregivers Josie, Russell and Retchen, along with Amica Whitby staff, whose compassion, dedication and kindness brought comfort and dignity to his final years. Your support meant the world to Bill and his family. We are deeply grateful.
Special thanks to Dr. P. Chaudhari for his wonderful care.
If desired, the family would be grateful for donations to the following charities: St. Mark’s United Church, ALS Society of Canada or Whitby Rotary Club.
Celebration of life to be held on October 18th, 2025, at St. Mark’s United Church, 201 Centre Street South, Whitby, Ontario to begin at 2:00 pm. Refreshments to follow.
