Kind, Caring, Independent. Carrie passed away peacefully in Ottawa, ON on 3 January 2017 at the age of 98 due to cardiopulmonary failure. Born in Springhill, NS on the 4 July 1918 to Marion Young and Murdoch Wilson, Carrie was the middle child of three girls. Their happy childhood was interrupted in 1928 when their father died suddenly while working on the family car.
Carrie's mother managed to raise three girls against the headwinds of the great depression with tremendous perseverance and help from her family in Stellarton, NS. Her mother worked at A.C. McCullough's department store in New Glasgow, NS and eventually opened her own dress shop in Stellarton. She later remarried Dan MacEachern of Stellarton.
After graduating from high school, Carrie attended business college and met Vernon Graham of nearby Trenton, NS through Vernon's sister, Doris Ryan. Carrie and Vernon were married on 28 April 1939. They lived in Stellarton, Antigonish, Halifax, Yarmouth, Saint John, Campbellton and Fredericton through the years as part of Vernon's career with Metropolitan Life Insurance company. They were avid curlers and volunteered with the Chimo crisis center and Meals on Wheels in Fredericton as well as with the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation. Despite having hands mangled by arthritis, Carrie knit little caps for newborn babies at Fredericton's hospital.
After Vernon died in 1995, Carrie continued a very active life, including curling in Fredericton until age 90. Her kind and caring nature earned her many friends wherever she went. In 2010, Carrie moved to Ottawa to be near family.
Carrie is predeceased by her husband Vernon Herald Graham, as well as her sisters Mabel MacSwain and Frances MacDonald. She is survived by daughter Marilyn Kemtes in Valencia, California as well as sons Tom in Ottawa and Alan in Vancouver. Her cousin Alex Cummings in Fredericton is a family historian.
The family wishes to thank all who helped care for Carrie, particularly Jan MacLeod and Archie Cameron of Fredericton, dear friends who we cannot thank enough.
Carrie's remains were cremated; interment will take place at the family plot in Trenton NS in the summer of 2017.
Carrie’s kind-hearted nature touched so many lives and leaves the world a better place.
