Ed's passing is a great loss to not only to those who knew him but to civility and the struggle for social justice.
He was a gentleman of the  old school. If he was in the office and  his phone rang he always picked it up.  If you left a message he returned the call promptly. This is because  in his eyes everyone was important. He made time  for everyone, the small as much as the big or that thought themselves big. 
I called him out of the blue with a pitch for The Monitor, a dark satire about the plan to bring a casino to Toronto. He encouraged me to write it. This was followed by another pitch- and still more encouragement, this time  to write a dystopian story about the  government raising money by  leasing the air to a private consortium that would  put meters on everyone to measure consumption for purposes of billing  and cutting off those who did not pay.
As a freelancer I've worked with dozens and dozens of editors. Ed was as good as it gets.
May his memory be for a blessing 





On the Facebook site, Historic Corner Brook, I shared Ed's obituary.  I think his family might enjoy reading the many remembrances that his former neighbours had.  He was just so well thought of.  

Ed was a wonderful writer, activist, and editor, and a lovely man.  My condolences to his family and myriad friends. His energy was amazing. It was a treat to write for the CCPA Monitor when he was editor, and to drop in on him at his office. He was always open to a range of ideas, did not hesitate to be critical, and was willing to change his mind if he could be convinced on the basis of shared principles. Ed's kindness and empathy, his honesty and humour, are all beacons for the rest of us.  Thank you, Ed!

Dena and family, our deepest condolences to all. Ed's passing is recieved with sadness and fond memories. As a National Representative of CUPE, I had many opportunities to meet and have conversations with Ed that revolved in and around the labour movement, all three levels of the political world, and of course labour politics. This friendship enabled me to develop a constructive response to matters that affected my responsibilities as a labour representative and as a retiree.  I will miss him very much. May your memories of Ed comfort you as you grieve and sustain you for years to come.

So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I grew up in Corner Brook, and during my High School years (early to mid 60's), lived on Howley Road, a few houses up from the Finns. My mother supported Ed and the NDPs back then, and they both had a direct influence on my being a life-long NDP'er.
I once made a banner (back in 1977, when I lived in Ottawa) for Allan Blakeney (commissioned by his friend Len Sullivan) with one of Norman Thomas' quotations on it: "Emancipation is a process, it is not merely a dramatic act." It had been my privilege to do that banner, and quite often my mind would go back to those Corner Brook years and think of Ed, and his influence on my social and political thinking.  I am  willing to bet he had a positive influence on many more people than would/could ever have been known about. 
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

My condolences to the family. My family lived across the street from the Finn family. Ed was gentle man and I had the pleasure of having several outings with him and members of his family.  I rember my dad speaking to Ed. Eds father and my father both worked at the mill. 

Sincere condolences to you all. Ed was such a remarkable man, smart, kind, generous, funny, and ahead of his time. I know my father enjoyed some interesting debates with Ed during his years of living in Ottawa. RIP. A life well lived. 

I am a distant cousin of Ed's, probably a third cousin.  My mother was a Finn.  I only knew Ed through his blog.  I did e-mail him explaining our ancestral connection and received a very kind  reply.   Sincere sympathy to his immediate family from all his Newfoundland Finn cousins who have spread throughout North America and at least one, my daughter, who now lives in our first homeland, Ireland.  I shall miss his thoughtful, intelligent posts.

My condolences to Deana and family. I have fond memories of Ed as both a neighbour and family friend during our years in the Glebe. He made a huge contribution to The Monitor and the CCPA, an organization Canadian progressives have relied on for decades. He leaves an incredible legacy for all that he has written over the years.

I had the privilege of working with Ed at CUPE and benefitting from his rich experience, wisdom and boundless humanity. He was a selfless and tireless example  to all. My condolences to members of the Finn family and to all who mourn his passing. He exemplified the spirit of J. S. Woodsworth, the founder of the CCF, now the NDP.  - "What we desire for ourselves we wish for all." May he rest in peace.
