Edith (Lowy) Rechnitzer

Edith, the younger of two sisters, was born in Gyor, Hungary to Jeno Lowy (d.1938) and Magda (Polgar) (d.1992). She studied Mathematics at University of Szeged and Economics at University of Budapest. She escaped to Canada in 1966 to marry Hubert whom she knew since high school, and whom she had not seen for ten years since his escape in 1956. Following their move to Ottawa, Edith worked for Stats Canada in the Education Division for 24 years, retiring in 1993.

Edith enjoyed travelling, was passionate about classical music, opera and art, obsessed with Sudoku and devoted to her daily swimming.

Edith will be remembered for her humility, gentleness, generosity, unassuming nature….and her weakness for chocolate and pastries.

The family is sincerely grateful to all her friends as well as staff at St Patrick’s for their love, attention and kindness throughout her final years.

A Funeral Service will be held at Holy Cross Parish, 685 Walkley Rd (at Riverside Dr) at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Reception to follow.
