Garry was predeceased by his mother, Lois Hutchingame McEvoy, his brother Brian McEvoy (Gloria), and his beloved sons Greg and Tom. He was the devoted and loving husband of Gail McEvoy for 58 years until her passing in 2020.
Garry is survived by his cherished grandson Tom (Miriam), granddaughter Dana Proulx, Tom’s mother Jennifer Proulx and her husband Jean-Guy Proulx.
A lifelong resident of Ottawa Garry spent his entire life in the community he loved. He was known for his easy smile, a wonderful laugh that could fill a room, and the friendly way he made everyone around him feel welcome.
Throughout his life, Garry enjoyed travelling with Gail, exploring new places around the world and returning home with wonderful stories of their adventures. A dedicated hockey referee for many years, he was a familiar face in local arenas. In retirement, he remained close to his Ottawa Hydro coworkers as well as a group of longtime friends from Sandy Hill.
Sunday dinners at Gloria’s or Kelly’s were among his happiest traditions, filled with stories, shared memories, and plenty of laughter. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, and the warmth he brought to every gathering.
Above all Garry treasured time with family and friends. He will be deeply missed by his sister-in-law Gloria, his nieces, Kelly (Patrick Lahey), Lisa (Andrew Parker), and Jennifer, his great nieces and nephew Brianna (Hayden Cross), Sydney, Samantha, Jonathan, and Michaela, his wonderful neighbours of Pine Hill Estates, and all who were fortunate to know him.
Friends may call at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road on Tuesday, December 16 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass Wednesday, December 17 at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Fallowfield.
