Jim and I were so saddened to hear that our dear friend Ed had passed away, his love of life,laughter and warm friendship will always be a lasting memory. Julie and Ed's home was always a place of welcome and genuine hospitality, you will always have a special place in our hearts. We have such fond memories of our bridge group in Halifax and our time together at the cottage. Rest in peace dear friends, you have earned it.  Ann and Jim Beasant

Thank you "Mr. Murphy".  The endless summers at the lake and your dear friendship with Mom and Dad will never be forgotten.

Eddie has been an important part of my life ever since I was born. He played the role of my grandfather and taught me so much about life, love and happiness. He was the most charismatic person I have ever known and I will miss him terribly. Thank you, Eddie, for being the best grandfather a girl could ask for. You will forever be a part of my life.

It seems all too often we've been gathered to say goodbye to another member of our family.  Maureen, the keeper of the family tree counted over 50 nieces and nephews, their children and a few children of children all of whom will miss Uncle Ed's charisma, enthusiasm and charm.  
Uncle Edmund was always quick with a smile, a kind word, or a story or two.  He had the gentlest nature about him and he always brightened every room he entered.  He was either a great actor or genuinely happy to see me each and every time.
I was thinking back to my earliest recollections of him and remembered the time we took a family vacation to visit Uncle Edmund in Halifax.   I'll never forget the look in his eyes when his two pound Chihuahua clamped on to my father's thumb as he was trying to wrestle ownership of the dog's favorite chair away from him.  As my father dangled this two pound alligator poor Uncle Edmond was aghast, the three young boys in the room thought it was quite funny, however nobody else shared our opinion.  
Maureen lived with Uncle Edmond while she attended St. Pat's; she also advised that the dog proved himself to be an able night watchmen and intruder alarm. Announcing her arrival with increasing intensity as the night drew on making a stealthy late night entrance impossible.
I often marveled at how in his eighties Uncle Edmund was still striding up fairways like a young man, chipping on greens like a seasoned veteran and cursing his putter which has no age restrictions.  In recent years the Murphy's have gotten together for a golf tournament.  It's on days like today you understand how valuable gatherings like that are, as we all had a little more time with each other than we otherwise would have.  I would like to thank Bob Murphy and all the hosts over the years who have all contributed to this important event.
Uncle Edmond was able to enjoy his life to the fullest every day with a zest that we can all learn from.  He enjoyed good health and was able to live his life exactly how he wanted to. When our time comes, if we can say that, then our lives have also been happy and successful.  
If 22 Cumberland exists in heaven the good news is he's being welcomed by his parents and sister's Eva, Alice, and Helen with brother's Irwin Cecil, Clarence, Wilfred, and my Dad, likely opening the beer fridge, and if you listen closely I think you can hear the party already.  I hope the boys clean up afterward or they'll hear from Aunt Alice.

I have known Ed ever since my childhood.  I used to go and visit him and Julie and Auntie Bea on Evelyn Street.  Ed always remained the gentle, welcoming and generous person, right to the end.  My wife Marie and I visited Julie and Ed ever since we were married.  We are saddened by his sudden death and pray for the repose of his soul.  I guess that the "Until death do us part" has moved on to the stage of "we are now once again reunited".  May God bless his soul.

The following is a tribute to our loving friend of the Gore Family, George Edmund Murphy, better known to us simply as Eddie.

We had an endearing friendship that spanned over 40 years. His love and devotion to my wife and our three daughters was very special. 

He attended all the important functions in our children's lives from birthdays, first communions, university graduations, weddings and everything in between.

His advice to all of us was to eat a little, drink a little, talk a little, sing a little and relax and enjoy the moment. Don't rush through an evening with good food and good company.
Over the span of our friendship we only missed 5 Christmas together & is a testimony of our love and respect for each other.

His love for mankind was very special. This was particularly evident in his unselfish compassion and love for others, especially those with disabilities or hardships.

This compassion is reflected in the story of a young Ethiopian University Student, Johannes, who came to live with Ed & Julie in Halifax, back in the 70s. It was the time of Civil war in Ethiopia & Johannes knew that he would have to return to his homeland. Ed & Julie tried in vain to adopt him so that he would not have to go back and face the conflict. Upon his return to his homeland Johannes married and they had a baby boy whom they named Eddie.

His love for the Cottage was contagious. He learned to wash dishes & vacuum the carpet, to make the fire in the morning, to make coffee (& it was good coffee), water ski well into his early eighties & to garden. His garden was his pride and joy and he boasted about his harvest every Fall no matter how big or small. 
He loved watching Lady chase the chipmunks.  Lady was his dog & she never left his side.
But his greatest joy at the Cottage was his garage. There, he would spend hours listening to CBC, sweeping the floor, tidying the clutter (which never seemed to diminish) & enjoying a pint or two of Old Milwaukee (Labatts was too expensive!!). He must have gone through several brooms over the years. He was a pack rat when it came to tools, screws, nails & any piece of left over material. You could ask him if he had just about anything and he would pull it out of his garage.

His favorite sport was golf and he had a special technique that developed over the years. Ball retrieval! 
He would stand at the tee box and with one mighty swing watch in awe as his ball found the woods. He would emerge from the woods 5 to 10 minutes later with 3-4 balls none of which were his. His second claim to fame was water hazards and yes he mastered the technique of using a ball retriever & you guessed it more golf balls !!! I am very confident he has already found some golf balls in Heaven.
Remembrance Day was a special day for him. I often took him down to the War Memorial so he could participate in the service. To see he and all the Veterans standing proudly through rain or sunshine brought tears to one's eyes. Following the ceremony he and his fellow veterans would march along the street in front of us with the greatest of dignity. Ed & I always returned to the Legion for the customary spaghetti luncheon & a pint or two. He was a proud Canadian.

Over the years he mentored my daughters as a Grandfather would. His soundest advice was to “ go out, have fun, have a few drinks and some laughs, but pace yourself so that you are always around for the end of the Party.”

It would appear that Eddie took his own advice he lived a full and rich life, travelling and socializing right up to the end. I think it safe to say that he made it to the end of the party.

"Eddie" was one of the happiest, most generous and loving  people I have ever known. He was my Godfather, but often played the role of Grandparent in my life. The lessons he taught me, and the advice he gave me, will always be remembered and appreciated, as will all of his funny stories. He will be missed dearly.

Uncle Ed was my substitute dad during my first two years at university.  He quizzed my dates and always had funny stories to tell.  He taught me how to play bridge - a hobby I still enjoy.  He was a gentle man and I will miss him.

Paul and I were so sorry to hear of Uncle Ed's passing. Our cottages weren't to far apart and we enjoyed some golf games with him. As we all know he was a Veteran of WW 2 and was pleased to return to Holland on their 60th anniversary of the ending of the war where he had been part of that countries liberation. We will miss you.

We will miss Uncle Ed - especially at the golf tournaments. He always had a smile and a comment to make.

So sorry to hear the news of Uncle Ed' passing. I have many wonderful memories of him as I grew up and enjoyed my honeymoon at his cottage at Lake Pemmishangan He will be missed here on earth as he joins his siblings and parents in eternal life. Pat and George McKenzie

Uncle Ed was such a warm charismatic man who never lacked a story or an experience to tell you. I am so glad that he regularly graced our yearly golf event with his presence.
