Horace William Himbury passed away peacefully on 23 February 2026, in his 90th year, at Saint Vincent’s Hospital (Bruyère Centre) in the palliative care unit. His family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff for their loving and professional care in his final days.
Born on 1 June 1936 in Montreal, Quebec, Horace remained proud of his Montreal roots throughout his life. He was a devoted and lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on his favourite team.
Horace shared more than 64+ wonderful years of marriage with his cherished wife, Alice Himbury (née Buchanan). Together they built a life grounded in love, resilience, and family. He was a proud and caring father to Karen Shepherd (Robert) and Heather Himbury (Michael), and a proud grandfather to Spencer. He is predeceased by his parents, Horace Chambers and Marie-Rose Himbury.
He was predeceased by his brother, Martin Francis Himbury, and is fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Diana. Horace will also be missed by his nephew Darin Himbury (Marilyn) and grand-nephew Nicholas, along with extended family and friends, including most notably the Fab 6.
Known for his “entrepreneurial” spirit, Horace had a passion for collecting and selling what his family affectionately referred to as “junk.” For several years, he operated his own stalls at local flea markets in the West Island of Montreal, where he delighted in conversation, negotiation, and the pleasure of discovering hidden “treasures”.
The family extends special thanks to the Multi Care Kidney Clinic Program (Ottawa Hospital) and its dedicated staff, to Bayshore Healthcare for their compassionate palliative support, and to Ontario atHome for their steadfast assistance, particularly to Herop (Harry), who became much loved by Dad. We express our deep gratitude to Rev. Rick Lorenz of St. Bernard Catholic Parish, Ottawa, and Fr. Anthony Bawanthade of St. Patrick’s Basilica, Ottawa, for their pastoral care and support especially in his last few days.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Easter Monday, April 6th, 2026. The time of the service will be announced in due course.
Horace will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, his not so quiet pride of his kid’s accomplishments, his abounding humour and one-liners, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He was a proud Knight of Columbus, who was an active member of 3rd Degree Council 13433 (St. Bernard Council) and the 4th Degree Vincent Tallon Assembly 2903 (Ottawa).
In lieu of flowers, we invite donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Multi-Year Kidney Clinic (Ottawa Hospital) or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
