

Uppal, Krishan Dev. (BA, BT, MSW, DPA). May 27, 2015. It is with great sadness that we announce that after a brief illness, Mr. Uppal passed away at the age of 87 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his children, Rajiv, Kiran and her husband Robert (Rahul), Kapil and his wife Kim (Kamal) and their four children and Dad's grandchildren: Dylan, Deven, Arjun, and Rohin. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Subhash, who passed away in 2010.
Born in India, Mr. Uppal immersed himself in extensive training and education, receiving his Bachelor Degree in Teaching at Punjab University, and a Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from The Hague. He also studied International Relations at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, as well as Berlin, Germany and Lund, Sweden. Upon immigrating to Canada, Mr. Uppal began his career as a High School Principal in Saskatchewan. In 1965, he joined the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, and relocated to Ottawa in 1972 as a Senior Policy Advisor. Upon his retirement in 1980, he continued to be an advocate and supporter of many causes and organizations, including advisor to the Ontario Advisory Council for Senior Citizens, Member of the Ontario Board of Parole, Commissioner to the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services, and Commissioner for the Ontario Advocacy Commission. Since 1990, his proudest accomplishment has been as President of the Canadian Alliance for Visible Minorities. Throughout his distinguished career and life, Dad was the recipient of many awards and citations, including The Governor General's Medal, the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship's Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Dad's moral convictions and values taught us life lessons that have served us well as adults and parents. A life well-lived, he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road at Albion Road, just east of Bank St. on Saturday May 30 from 4 - 6 p.m. Funeral Service on Sunday May 31 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road at Greenbank Road.
