It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Leslie (Ted) Montbriand passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2021. Deeply beloved husband of Doris (née Waugh). Loving stepfather of Steve, (Cathy), Jeanne (Sofia), Suzanne (Geoff), Carole (Gord) and Roch (Edwina); grandfather of Ryan, Tyler and Jenny; Sarah; and Angela; and great-grandfather to Rory, Weston, Vanessa, Vincent and Fletcher. He is also survived by his brothers Fred (Muriel) and Michael (Gayle) and sister Evelyn (Kent). He was predeceased by brothers Richard, Alex and Thomas, and sister Margaret.
Ted was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 5th, 1936, the third son of Bernard and Hilda Montbriand (née Twardochleb). Ted grew up a curious and athletic boy, playing for Campion College’s title-winning football team before going on to obtain his BE and MSc from the University of Saskatchewan. He was hired by the Defence Research Board in Ottawa. Assigned to research in Churchill, Manitoba, he studied hydrogen emissions in auroral storms, which provided the source material for his 1968 PhD in atmospheric physics. In Churchill, he met and married Elsie Halasz, to whom he was married for 22 years before she passed away in 1987. He found love with Doris, whom he married in 1989 and with whom he shared the rest of his life. Ted retired from the federal government in 1995. In addition to sharing the love of his extended family, he dedicated much of his retirement years to compiling detailed genealogies of the Montbriand and Waugh families, which he published in two hard-cover volumes. Deeply devoted to his Roman Catholic faith, Ted, always accompanied by Doris, was a faithful parishioner of St. Patrick’s Basilica and when, due to mobility issues he needed a house of worship closer to home, St. Theresa’s Church. He and Doris also enjoyed attending activities together at the Good Companions Centre.
Constrained by Covid-19 protocols, a private family service will be held on Monday, January 25th and interment in Notre Dame Cemetery will follow at a later date. A celebration of Ted’s life will be organized for friends, extended family and well-wishers in due course when public health measures allow.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Parkinson Canada at donate.parkinson.ca
