Robert Dennis Lovell, a kind, generous, and deeply intelligent man who lived a life of quiet dedication and profound love for music, passed away leaving behind a legacy of compassion, curiosity, and inspiration.
Robert was born in Toronto on October 19, 1940 and spent part of his youth growing up in California.
In 1972, Robert began working at The Civic Hospital as a Porter in the Department of Laboratory Medicine when the department first opened. He remained in that role for 35 years, retiring after a remarkable career marked by unwavering commitment. Known for his extraordinary work ethic, Robert never missed a single day of work during those decades. As a porter, he walked an astonishing 25 to 30 kilometers daily, embodying resilience, reliability, and pride in service.
Music was Robert’s great passion. He had a prodigious knowledge of classical music, particularly the piano works of Mozart, which brought him immense joy. Through a connection with Gil Desforges, a colleague and friend who worked alongside him at the Civic Hospital, Robert was referred to piano teacher Joan Quirt. Joan became both mentor and cherished friend, and over more than 35 years they shared a bond rooted in music, gratitude, and mutual respect. Born on the same day, they celebrated their shared birthday each year with a special lunch — a tradition Robert treasured deeply.
Through Joan’s influence, Robert became actively involved in the Laurentian Junior Music Club (LJMC), an organization dedicated to nurturing young musicians in a supportive, non-competitive environment. His generosity to the club was extraordinary: for 12 consecutive years, he donated $5,000 annually to support scholarships. Today, three scholarships — junior, intermediate, and senior — continue in his name, a lasting testament to his commitment to encouraging young talent and giving back through music.
In retirement, Robert remained a familiar sight on long walks through the community, preferring the rhythm of walking over taking the bus. His love of movement mirrored the steady, thoughtful pace with which he lived his life.
Robert will be remembered by all who knew him — former colleagues, neighbors, friends, and the many young musicians whose futures he helped shape — as a kind, gentle, generous man whose love for music and dedication to others left an enduring mark.
His legacy lives on in scholarship, in song, and in the many hearts he quietly touched.
A Memorial Gathering for Robert will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
