At home with his family, Shane died as he lived – in his garish orange Old Ottawa South Firehall Coach’s t-shirt. Comfort over style – he remained true until the end. Many will recall his dry humour, his loyal friendship, his fierce love of competition and his inexplicable attachment to economic policy development and delivery. A man for whom the phrase “good enough” held little meaning, Shane’s life in Ottawa saw him strive for excellence at work, on the volleyball court, on the baseball field, as a soccer, baseball and softball coach, as well as Ottawa Centre Minor Hockey Association’s equipment manager. At Industry Canada where he worked for many years, Shane leaves a legacy of many friends and achievements. His service to family, community and country were recognized though his receipt of both the Queen’s Golden and Diamond jubilee medals. Shane was predeceased by his father, Robert and his sister, Brenda Riley. He leaves behind his wife Karin Fuller and their three children; Jacob, Mira and Riley. He was dearly loved. Those who knew him will miss him greatly; those who did not, certainly missed out. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) Ottawa, on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 5-9 pm and on Friday, April 25, 2014 after 1 pm followed by a funeral service in the Chapel at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the Hospice at May Court or the Ottawa Cancer Centre at the Ottawa General Hospital, as thanks for all of the great care and support received. Online condolences may be sent to mcevoy-shields.com
