Susan encouraged her children to shoot for the stars and pursue joy. A lover of art and spectacular artist herself, she saw beauty in everyday things and weaved stories from them, sometimes in song form. Susan travelled the world and made lifelong friends along the way; she learned to speak 5 languages and could tell a joke in all of them. Her sense of humour always surrounded her with laughter and good company.
Susan was born in Winnipeg on November 21, 1950, to Jack and Margaret Rachlis, and was raised in Ottawa. She met her husband, Glen Fisher during her time as Vice-Consul of the Canadian Embassy in Costa Rica for the Trade Commissioner Service; after a short courtship upon her return to Canada and a romantic proposal, they married in Montreal, where their children Gail, Ross, Linda, Tamara and Charlotte were raised. She returned with Glen to Ottawa in 2010; they spent their retirement years visiting with children and grandchildren, accompanied by their dog, Oscar. Susan continued painting and taking art courses, continuously filling their home with colour. After a brave and extraordinary fight with cancer, Susan left us on August 19, 2021, surrounded by family at the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa.
Susan leaves behind her loving husband Glen and children Gail (Wayne), Linda (Stephen), Tamara (Michael), and Charlotte (Marco); grandchildren Lee (Chris), Callum, Kyra, David, Helen, Layla, and Stella; and great-grandchildren Abby and Margot. She is predeceased by her son, Ross. She spent many happy times laughing with her brother, Lorne (Louise) and was loving Auntie Susie to Josh, Diana (Dan) and Naomi (Jesse). She will be greatly missed by her friends and neighbours who were an amazing source of laughter and comfort.
A private funeral service took place on August 20, 2021 at the Jewish Memorial Gardens - Osgoode, and can be viewed at https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/35391. Given current covid restrictions, a virtual Shiva will be held for extended family and friends at a later date.
Our thanks to the incredible medical professionals who helped Susan along this journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Élisabeth Bruyère Foundation - Palliative Care Unit or the Osgoode Care Centre would be greatly appreciated.
