Dorothy Albertson, was born in Magnolia, New Jersey on June 19, 1924 during the height of the Great Depression. She was the youngest of 5 children. Her family was very poor and lived and worked on a farm where they grew tomatoes for Campbell's soup. Her middle name is Albertson because that was the name of the farm they worked.
Mom loved to roller skate. In her teens, while in high school, she was part of a girl's skating club called "the Debs". One night she locked eyes with Johnny at the skating rink and it was love at first sight. She thought he was so cute and he felt the same. They dated for many years. Then WWII came and Dad enlisted in the Navy. He wouldn't marry Mom before the war "just in case". She worked in Philadelphia at Bell and Howell where she was a secretary. They both saved money for their future for after the war.
5 days after dad came home they were married. They bought and lived in a creaky old single wide trailer in Skokie Ill, a suburb of Chicago, while dad went to electronics school. They lived on his GI bill and her earnings from her secretary job. Their trailer didn't have a bathroom. They had to trudge thru the snow to take a shower. After dad graduated they decided to come to CA. Mom worked at Yards and Docks in Port Hueneme. They bought an empty lot in El Rio and built their lifelong home in 1952 when I was 2 months old. It was then decided she would be a stay at home mom and she loved her new role in life. She had a hot meal on the table every night, the house was always spotless, and she loved to work with her flowers in her yard.
Dad retired in 1976 when they started to travel, take cruises, and have seen most of the world. They loved camping in their motorhome and every day would consist of water skiing, pinochle, cocktails and hours of laughter.
Mom loved to go to Chumash Casino and play the penny slots where she usually lost. But because of her humble beginning she would be so excited over a simple $5 jackpot.
She also loved the Outback restaurant and her favorite Manhattan!!
Mom was loved by all. She loved her family and was a wonderful Gramma. She was a devoted and loving wife for 75 years but most of all she was the best Mom til the end.
