Born on January 14, 1933 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, James grew up with a deep sense of duty and a love for his country. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served. His naval career was marked by dedication, honor, and the respect of his peers.
After retiring from the Navy, James and his family settled in Oxnard, CA, before later moving to Lake Isabella. There, he became an integral part of the community, known for his generosity and warm smile. James was a tile setter by trade and loved to take care of his garden and flowers and also loved to fish.
James is preceded in eternal peace by parents, William and Ella McMakin, and his loving wife of 59 years, Lorraine.
His spirit will live on and remembered by his children, Ellann, Rick (Ida), David, and Terri Jo; his grandchildren Kaley, Christopher, Nathan, Gwen, and Kimberly; and great-grandchildren Charlotte, Alex, and Arron; many friends, neighbors, and fellow veterans who were touched by his kindness and spirit.
A committal service to honor James’s life and legacy will be held on September 25, 2024, at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, with military honors to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in James's memory.
James Andrew McMakin leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and dedication that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he loved and served.
