We were so sorry to hear of Joel's passing.  Having worked with him for  approximately 20 years, he was always a kind, respectful,  professional dental practitioner. Along with Dr. Maurice (Buzzy) Tischler of Woodstock, we were happy to do Joel's own dental restorations.

Dr Hirschberg worked on my two front shattered teeth in 1972ish. I went flying over the top of my handlebars when my purse swung in to the front wheel of my bike on an excursion to get ice cream with a friend. My parents were not easy to impress and they were impressed with how much he helped us. My teeth, as described by Dr Hirschberg to my parents and me after the accident, looked like road maps they were so badly shattered. I “lived” in his office as he did root canal to save enough of the root to build caps upon. In as many appointments as I had I came to look forward to seeing the photographs Dr Hirschberg  posted on the walls of his treatment rooms. I guessed the woman featured in many of the photos was his love. It was the 70’s and he was a cooler professional than anyone my parents had taken me to, and yet he was professional and compassionate and kind. In short he helped us. And,  through it all I was highly intrigued by his art as a photographer, displayed proudly on the walls of his treatment rooms. I remember a woman in a red shirt and what I thought of as go-go boots. I remember thinking she probably wasn’t  his wife but she probably would be at some time in the future. This, in my 12 year old mind. 

To this day I can’t see a person carrying something/anything on their bicycle handlebars without warning them about what might happen if that item swings in to their front tire. 
Dr Hirschberg was a good dentist and inspired confidence in me and my parents. He helped us at a very traumatic time and did so with dignity and professionalism and a very cool office.

My dad was the most amazing man on the planet. He cared for all of us kids and everyone in his life. He was so funny and always knew how to cheer me up. I will always have the fond memories of us dancing together and going to the father daughter dance. I will always love him.  Rest in peace daddy, I love you.

Never in my life have I known a kinder, more gentle soul. It has been an absolute blessing to have been able to spend the past 3 years caring for and being cared for by Joel.  We shared memories from way back and created many new ones along the way. He kept his old  friends close and so easily made lots of new friends here. He loved his family fiercely.  Joel faced every challenge with grace, humility and great humor. He battled his disease like a warrior.  It was my extreme privilege to have assisted him in this. A beloved hero, indeed.  May God rest his soul.   

I can't even imagine a world without Joel. I feel that he is still and will always be with us. I I am fond of saying that the only way any of us can live forever is in  the hearts and minds of those who loved us. I know that Joel will remain in mine until we meet again. Rest in peace, my dear friend and brother.

To Joel's family,

My family became Joel's patients in 1972 following our move to Suffern.   After a further move to Connecticut in 1979, we continued as patients until the time of his retirement.  We found him to be exceptionally competent and honest - the best dentist ever.  More than that, he was compassionate and caring and a dear friend to all of us.  I pay him the highest respect and honor - he was a decent and thoroughly good man.

I am saddened to learn of Joel's death and I pray to God in Heaven that He will watch over his beautiful soul.  Rest in peace my friend.

I first heard about Joel’s death. And since then I can’t wrap my mind around his being gone.   We all spent phenomenal summers  together at Ocean Beach and in the City.  And Joel as our MC, voice of reason, and mentor.  He accepted all of us as we were.  Even a handful like me! 

Joel was unique, extraordinary and unforgettable.  I will never forget his kindness, friendship, and love.

I  have the link for the memorial this Sunday morning and will be in attendance.  I hope we can reconnect soon.

I was so sad to hear about your dad.  He was a wonderful person and an amazing dentist.  I have never had another dentist as great as he was.  He was a kind and gentle soul.  I hope you cherish your memories.  Eva Gordon

Joel, Harvey Brooks and myself were best friends since we were 12 year olds growing up together in Teaneck  N.J. He was also my dentist for as long as he practiced. I will never forget all the great memories of having such great times being together. We have lost a wonderful person and he will be missed by all.RIPJoel

Joel was the dentist for my family for at least 30 years. He was honest and an excellent dentist. We had full confidence in his work. Joel was professional yet always friendly and easy to talk to. We send our condolences to his whole family.

So sorry for your loss.  We first met Joel when we moved to Suffern in the 70’s.  He was the kindest person and a true professional practicing dentistry.  Our kids were so comfortable going for their dentistry needs.  May he Rest In Peace.
