A hui hou kakou. Aloha. (Until we meet again with love) Maurice, 81, passed away peacefully at home in Oxnard after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Folkston, Ga., and resided in Ventura County for 43 years. Maurice was a career United States Navy man, retiring in 1978 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He specialized in Avionics and served in Korea and Viet Nam. He was stationed largely in the South Pacific: Japan, the Philippines, and his favorite place, the islands of Hawaii. Maurice loved to travel with his wife, Barbara, and their cat, Charlie Brown. They were members of the Happy Rovers of Ventura County, and enjoyed spending time with friend in Verde Vally, Ariz. He was also a "shopper," spending many hours roaming the aisles of Costco and Sam's Club. He was a member of the Elk's Club and had a great time treasure hunting with his metal detector. Maurice also spent the last 27 years of his life involved in a sober, spiritual program, with many, many friends.
Maurice is survived by his wife and best friend, Barbara; brother, James Powell; children, Becky, Jeff, Jesse and Jonathan; several grand and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his stepsons, Michael (Jamie) and Chris (Barbara); and his granddaughter Whitney, whom he shared many stories of Charlie the cat. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Annie Faye Powell; sister, Dorothy; and brother, Wallace.
The family wishes to thank Livingston Memorial Nurses for their care of Maurice, and friends, Bob and Jimmy Mac for their assistance during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society .
