Christine Blackmon Dunlap, known to her friends as Chris, was born September 22, 1922, in Leesville, Louisiana. She was the second daughter of the Reverend Sampson and Georgia Renfro Blackmon. Chris graduated from Logansport High School, Logansport, La., class of 1939 and attended off campus classes at the Methodist Women’s College in Mansfield, La. and later classes at Creighton University in Omaha, NE (including lecture classes by Warren Buffet).
She married Captain Glen R. Dunlap, of Priddy, Texas on December 1, 1945 and quickly learned to be a dedicated Air Force Wife. As they moved around the United States and Southeast Asia, she taught their children, Susan and Randy, that the biggest job the three of them had was to be good sports about the moves and to support their Dad in his Air Force career, for the good of the family and their country. She always told them that the travel advantages far outweighed the disadvantages and she did everything in her power to help them make the adjustments to new schools and new friends. While overseas they never traveled to other countries without taking the children. They wanted them to share in all the adventures and to learn all they could about other people and countries.
Chris taught Sunday school at various churches and Air Force Chapels around the country and was deeply involved in THE PROTESTANT WOMEN OF THE CHAPEL for many years. She organized and directed the Dependants Assistance program at Barksdale Air Force Base. At various times throughout the years she held almost all of the elected offices in the Officers Wives Club and chaired many of the committees. She served as an Advisor to many groups on the Air Force Bases, including Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Commissary Board, Base Exchange Board, Non Commissioned Officers Wives Clubs, Nursery and positions in the Ladies Golf Associations. Chris was a charter member of the Air Force Village Foundation (purchased her membership from Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay). She was past President of the Ladies Golf at Ozark Country Club, past President of the Dale County Republican Women, and member of the First United Methodist Church in Ozark, AL.
Being a homemaker and mother was something she took great pride in and this had priority over other things. As an Air Force Commander’s wife her schedule was hectic but she found time to play a lot of golf. She remembered, fondly, that her first round of golf was played at Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, TX in 1949. Chris felt that her lady golfing friends were exceptional people and she made all over the Air Force and the United States during her golfing years. She loved all of them.
Chris went out of her way to help people and to listen to their problems. She loved her husband and her children dearly and took great pride in their achievements. Raised in a religious family, she was a person with great faith in God and the power of prayer. She also loved her life as a mother and as an Air Force wife and felt that she wouldn’t have traded places with anyone. Her life was rich and full.
Chris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen Randolph Dunlap; her sister, LaRayne Bounds; her brothers, A. David Blackmon and Harlon R. Blackmon.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Dunlap West of Ozark; her son, Glen “Randy” R. Dunlap, Jr. of Jacksonville Beach, FL; her sisters, Billie June Gregory and Juanita Blackmon Murphy both of La; also surviving are her grandchildren, Stephanie Marie West and Heather Lynn West Hedberg and a host of nieces and nephews.
