
Dr. Van was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, grew up in Southern California, and attended Servite High School in Anaheim, California. Dr. Van graduated from medical school at UCLA in 1970, completed his Orthopedic Surgical Residency at the University of Pennsylvania in 1976, and concluded a tour of duty for the United States Army at Dwight D. Eisenhower Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. In 1979 he opened a medical practice in both Enterprise and Ozark. Dr. Van retired from active surgical practice in 2002. He continued a non surgical practice until the time of his death.
As a physician, Dr. Van dedicated his life to the care of his patients and the practice of orthopedic medicine. As a husband, dad, and 'pappy' he enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and beloved dog, Alphie. He was known for his interesting and open view points, unrestrained laughter and insatiable quest for knowledge. Among his many passions were his lifelong commitments to UCLA basketball and Alabama football.
Dr. Van is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Dr. Jeffrey Lawson, of Pensacola, Florida; daughter, Missy (John) Ramage, and three grandchildren, Riley, Mary and Amy Ramage, all of Brundidge, Alabama; a sister, Sue VanderZyl; a step-mother, Pat VanderZyl; a step-brother, Gary (Marsha) Debrestian, all of California; parents in- law, Lucille and Therman Palmer, of Hartford, Alabama; his devoted office staff, Shirley Pescia and Rhonda Peters; as well as many loyal patients.
Dr. Van was preceded in death by his parents, Keith VanderZyl, Sr. and Doris VanderZyl.
As a unique individual who celebrated and enjoyed life, Dr Van's wishes for no traditional services are being honored by his family. He will be missed by those who knew him and remembered by so many whose lives he touched.
