She was formally trained as an Embroiderer and Seamstress.
She had two children while In Jamaica Dorene ( Dec’d) and Clarence.
She migrated to the United States when her then Fiancee, Joscelyn Martin (Dec’d), sent for her. He always claimed the money he paid for his marriage license was the best money he spent in his life. They married when she arrived in the United States in 1950 and in the year 2000 they celebrated their 50th year Wedding anniversary.
They lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York until they relocated to Palm Bay, Florida in 1998.
She worked as an Embroiderer in NYC, NY for over thirty years. She retired in the late 1970’s and began her own Embroidery business out of the attic apartment in her home.
The definition of the name Floris is ” Flowering in Bloom”. Floris truly lived up to her names meaning. She loved gardening and had a front yard full of beautiful blooming flowers and a back yard full of veggies!! She loved plants so much that in her later years she had a room at the front of her house full of lush green and flowering house plants.
She also loved to bake, cook and entertain family and friends. She was a consummate Baker and no one could touch her culinary skills in the kitchen. We all can attest to our favorite “Aunt Flo” dish, cake, eggnog…..the list is endless. Her home was the heart of the family. When family or friends migrated from England, Jamaica, Guyana, Panama, Barbados….the first stop was at “Flo”. She had an open door and open kitchen policy. No one who came through her home was turned away and no one ever left hungry. She always made you feel right at home. There were always two refrigerators in her kitchen and a freezer full of food in her basement. She was always at the ready.
She had the patience of a Saint and very rarely did she get angry.
She was an active member of St Thomas Episcopal Church on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn, NY from the late 1960’s until she relocated to Florida. She was in the Church choir singing as Soprano, she was on the Altar Guild as well as the Episcopal Church Women’s (ECW)
She had a warm magnetic personality and was always described as “sweet”. Even in her last days people consistently described her as being a sweet woman. She will always be remembered as the one who brought family together. She offered unconditional love and understanding to all who were blessed to cross her path.
Her legacy of love continues on in those she leaves behind : her son Clarence, her grandchildren, Michael, Camille, Paul, Elaine and Christine; her great – grandchildren Nadine, Dean, Tanya, Rashema, Francesca, Aaron, Lance , Nyeem, Sheldon, Jai, Ronan, Kai, Cameron and Shyann. Her God children Donald Morris, Jr., Ira Doughty and Blossom Washington. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all whom celebrated her life.
