

JoAnn was born November 9, 1948 in New York, New York. Frank and Jo (Prince) Parla in the Bronx, NY. JoAnn was the first member of her family to attend college, and went on to earn her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics/Spanish at the State University Of New York at Buffalo.
After a distinguished academic career in New York, JoAnn retired as Professor Emerita from SUNY Fredonia in 2004, and relocated to Palm Bay where she was named Professor Emerita at Florida Tech and continued to teach classes until her passing.
JoAnn was raised in the Bronx Italian tradition and valued food, family, and friends above all else. She regularly hosted international students and faculty at holiday dinners where guests were encouraged to bring dishes from their home countries.
JoAnn was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gabriel J. Palumbo, and her former husband John J. McCormick.
JoAnn is survived by her daughter Marisa (Edward) Johnson, granddaughter Lily McCormick Johnson, her brother James (Larisa) Parla, niece and goddaughter Allyson Jo (Bill) Fick, niece Kaitlyn (Ray) Panza, nephew Brendan (Ashley) Parla, and her great-nieces and -nephews Jared, James, Xavier, Emmie, Isla, and Layla.
The memorial service will be held on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 11:00am at the Fountainhead Funeral Home at 7359 Babcock St SE, Palm Bay, FL 32909. Followed by a light reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Aging Matters in Brevard at https://agingmattersbrevard.org/.
