John Loretto Buzzelli, Sr., a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2024 in Melbourne, Florida at the age of 90. John, the son of Mathilda and Evaristo Buzzelli, was born as a twin brother (Joseph) on December 25, 1933 in Hibbing, Minnesota.
John graduated from Hibbing High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (1955). He began his career with Uniroyal Tires in Detroit, Michigan. His career path led him to relocate to Miami, Florida where he managed operations for Uniroyal Central America. He ended his career as a plant manager of Uniroyal in South Bend, Indiana.
John served honorably as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves.
He married in Hibbing, Minnesota to Jane A. Murray on August 8, 1955. John and Jane were blessed with seven children. John was dedicated to providing for his family and imparting his wisdom to all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. John was an avid sportsman and was enthusiastic to share with his children his love of hunting, fishing, boating and active play. As a true patriarch, he was a stalwart support in times of need for his family.
After retirement, John was known for his active lifestyle which continued to include hiking, biking, fishing, and tennis playing. He also discovered artistic talent for tole painting, furniture making, macrame and stained-glass artistry. His family was often the appreciative recipients of his beautiful creations. John’s retirement was also filled with R.V. travel which included visiting family, friends, state, and national parks.
Preceded in death by his parents Mathilda and Evaristo Buzzelli, his elder brother Evaristo Buzzelli, his twin brother Joseph (Monica) Buzzelli and his wife Jane.
He is survived by his sister-in-law: Beverly Buzzelli. His loving children: John Buzzelli, Jr, Betsy McPhee, Alice (Terry) Gehring, Peter (Jennifer) Buzzelli, Timothy (Rina) Buzzelli, Christopher (Lori) Buzzelli, and Mary (Charles) Schaus. His grandchildren: Matthew Buzzelli, Michelle Troxel, Kristen Buzzelli, Heather Rich, Rachel Buzzelli, James (J.J.) McPhee, Brittany Buzzelli, Christopher Buzzelli, Nicole McPhee, Alexandra Ward, Alyssa Jochens, Rhett Gehring, Stephanie Downey, Noah Georgeff, Dominic Buzzelli, Grace Betancourt, Savannah Buzzelli, Sophia Buzzelli, and eighteen great grandchildren.
John was a devout Catholic from an altar boy through lifelong devotion to participation in Mass and sacraments. May his family and friends remember how his life, love, advice and prayers touched their lives and may they be comforted knowing he has reached his eternal reward and reunited with Jane, his wife of 67 years.
The Buzzelli family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of St. Francis Reflections for their compassionate, gentle care during John’s final days.
A private (family only) funeral/interment will be held at Fero Memorial Gardens. A public “Celebration of John’s Life” will be held May 18, 2024 at Plantation Inn, 9301 W. Fort Island Trail.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in John’s honor to St. Francis Reflections Melbourne Care Center.
