Ted Whitlock was born and raised in northern Virginia in a small town called Winchester, in the heart of Shenandoah Valley. His mother, Jean Huff (Altman), did the best she could to raise Ted and his younger brother, Billy, on her own. They survived with very littles means and both boys began working at age 10 and throughout their childhood with odd end jobs such as delivering newspapers, collecting bottles, shining shoes, caddying at golf course, until they left home. He was a tremendous athlete in high school, lettering in Varsity in various sports. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury and could no longer play football. Frustrated, young and naïve, he dropped out of high school at age 17 and joined the military. Eventually, he completed his GED and even took several college courses. Ted thrived within the military structured environment. He had a long, successful career receiving numerous national awards along the way in recognition for his exemplary service. He spent 22 years in the USAF in security/law enforcement and 18 years in US Civil Services/Department of Defense. After retiring from the government, he became an Industrial Security Consultant until 2005.
He met and married the love of his life, Suzy, while stationed at Clark AB, Philippines. They traveled all over the world with the military and experienced many ups and downs especially as a young couple. They have always lived by humble and simple life. Ted and Suzy were married for 58 years, both committed to their marriage and determined to give their children a better life than they had. Their favorite past-times were dancing, especially the jitter-bug, playing card games including pinochle, canasta, and penny-ante poker, mom cooking – dad eating!, and spending time with family.
Ted’s final assignment was Patrick AFB, FL. He was determined to establish roots in a community and made the conscience decision to remain in one location before his children entered high school. From experience, he knew that teenage years can be delicate times. It was important to him that his daughters have stability and the ability make life-long friendships. They raised their daughters, Lisa and Cynthia (“Terry”), in Palm Bay, FL. Both Lisa and Cynthia were extremely active in sports and clubs. Ted always believed in encouraging children to participate in organized activities. It keeps them busy, out of trouble, builds character, and you get to know their friends. He and Suzy were 100% supportive of Lisa and Cynthia’s activities. From shuttling a station-wagon full of loud girls to games/camps, working concession stands, coaching, keeping stats, and hosting slumber parties, they did it all with a smile.
His pride and joy were his three grandchildren, Skylar Johnson (age 18), Cheyne Johnson (age 15) and Brie Mercado (age 12). His grandchildren adored their Poppy. He was a kind, patient, loving grandfather. He always had a story for them, anxious to teach them about the importance of respecting your elders and honoring the veterans that gave their lives and those that continue to serve, when the next rocket was launching, random facts about history, life lessons and how ‘easy’ they have it now compared to when he was growing up.
Ted was also passionate about serving and contributing to the community. He was a dedicated and active volunteer for several organizations including:
• Air Force Security Forces Association - Space Coast Chapter Chairman, Life Member
• Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard - Life Member
• Noncommissioned Officers Association - Space Coast Chapter - Life Member
• The Retired Enlisted Association - Life Member
• Welcome Home Vets - Board of Directors
• Brevard County Veterans Council - Life Member
• American Legion Post 117
• Brevard County South Area Advisory Board - Chairman (Past)
• Palm Bay Regional Park Citizen Advisory Committee - Chairman (Past)
• National Association of Retired Federal Employees
He loved God, his family, his country and his community. He was a caring and devoted husband and father. He was content with his life, never wanted material things, just valued time with his family and friends. In so many ways, he died a very wealthy man. He left this world a better place and he will be missed by many.
