Olga Adolia Sastre González
Extra, Extra!! Read all about it! Our mother was born on Sept 12, 1931 in a home that was ready to receive a baby with a great future!! She grew up in the town of Vega Baja, surrounded by strong family values and love. Her life was a reflection of these values; among which were high sense of responsibility, commitment, and loyalty.
She was a woman of many talents together with a superior intelligence. Leading her to achieve the Valedictorian Award in High School and afterwards becoming a Teacher and Social Worker. Both these professions gave her the opportunity of being close to people and helping them in any way she could! Providing Service to others was another of her core values! She even started to plan on studying to become a Lawyer (and we strongly believe she would have been outstanding); but she got pregnant with her youngest daughter and decided to dedicate her time to raising all of us.
She fell in love early in life, while she was still studying in High School and got married in 1949 with what she would always say was “the love of her life: Pedro Alicea Ramos, known by all as “the Teenager from Morovis”. And she really meant it!! She always said that “her heart only belonged to him!” They were married for 59 years, until Dad passed away in 2008.
She held many titles; but the ones she lived with passion were being a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother; even Mother-In-law!! Here she was the funny, caring, awesome, and loving person she was meant to be. But she was also very demanding with the educational aspect of everyone! She inspired everyone to study with passion and work to the best of their abilities and talents. She emphasized in performing with Excellence! She engaged in having her grandchildren at her home during summers so they could participate in Summer Camps.
She enjoyed Family and social gatherings and parties where she could be herself! By this we mean being the Joy of the Party! Including being happy, energetic, and a natural dancer! As years passed on, she would also engage and have a great time reciting poems; something she “picked up from Daddy. She even acted as the Master of Ceremony for different types of parties and special events.
And of course let’s not forget her good taste for enjoying a glass of chilled red wine, Sangria and Margaritas. She was not a big eater; but she had her special foods which she would request from time to time: Chickpeas stew with pork, and white rice! And she was always ready for going out and eat Puerto Rican traditional cod fish fritters ; especially if they were from a Restaurant in Piñones Beach called “Donde Olga”.
She was a great party planner! She organized all our weddings, and sweet 15th Birthday for our sister Amy and many girls from Mom’s office colleagues or friends, without charging a penny for this! She attended almost all the births of our children and also all their birthdays, graduations and special events. For her Family was always first.
One more strong quality she had was Leadership!! She was affiliated to the first Majorette Group of Puerto Rico founded in 1962 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico known as: “Las Batuteras Olímpicas de Guaynabo”. Here she held the title of President of the Parents Group for over 25 years. And from this position she put to service her Social Woker’s knowledge thru helping many youngsters with guidance and coaching to solve day to day family situations. I can hear her say “You must study and become a good member of society”. She always promoted and encouraged leadership among the youth. She had an amazing group of parents that assisted her with the decision making and many other things needed in the organization.
She was a key player in the success of the organization throughout PR and many other places where the majorettes performed. Among these the Puerto Rican Parades in New York and Chicago, the Pan-American Games in Panama, Venezuela, and Dominican Republic. She became a role model for many of the people in this organization.
For 2 years in a row we celebrated her 90th (Sept 2021) and 91st (Sept 2022) Birthdays with Mexican Mariachis. The 90th was with a complete serenade at home and the 91st at one of her favorite Mexican Restaurant, Aurorita’s.
This year the town of Guaynabo honored the organization thru a recognition activity to both the founder of the majorettes group and our mother for her long years of service and leadership. It was a beautiful and well deserved recognition!
Now, Mom also had a “Temper” and sometimes could even be stubborn. She would be very assertive in expressing her points of view and thoughts especially if they were to defend someone or a just cause.
The Legacy and by what she will be remembered is very extensive. Extensive because she touched so many lives with her unconditional love! We have been receiving so many remarkable and loving messages from many of these persons, of which a lot are from friends from our past. Letting us know that she will be missed; but remembered in their hearts. They highlighted on the special way she had in teaching values, and in being a role model of perseverance, tenacity, wisdom and always to follow your dream and goals!! Some even called her an exceptional human being!! They said mom was “tough and fair” at the same time. And always striving for Excellence. We have no doubt, that she has left many footprints to be followed.
Her Legacy extends to all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all have “something” for which she will be remembered. Even in the personality of the youngest 2 year old, whom dances so beautifully, the teenagers that think she was “the coolest” great grandma or like they used to call her, BIGUELI DOLLY. She lives in each one of her daughters. Each one has a special resemblance of her character, gifts and talents.
We thank God for allowing her to live a long and productive life! For giving her to us as our Mother! And for confiding in us to take care of her until her last breath. She has gone physically but will always remain in our hearts and memories! We will have moments of crying and others of laughing; but above all, we are grateful to God for his mercy and love to her! And now she’s our guardian angel.
On the dawn of August 6, Dad; your eternal love, came for you and took you by his hand to be forever together!
Mom, we do not say “Good-bye; we say “we will meet again in God’s time”!
Us, your daughters: Mara, Gualy, Lida and Amy, and your son, Jan together with family members and friends wish you may Rest In Peace!
