Ralph “Mac” McGovern, 90, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach. Mac was born in Rochester, Minnesota and came to Florida in 1984 from Michigan. Before retiring he worked as a designer for Ford Motor Company.
Mac was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served on the USS Maryland during seven major battles of the Pacific Theater: Pearl Harbor, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Palau, Leyte, and Okinawa.
Mac was a member of the Moose Lodge, the VFW and the American Legion in Vero Beach.
Mac is survived by his wife Claire, his sons Michael and Marty, and his daughters Elaine, Deborah all of Michigan and Lorie of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his son Patrick.
A visitation will be held from 5-7p.m., Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Fountainhead Funeral Home in Palm Bay, FL. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Burial will follow Friday at Fountainhead Memorial Park, Palm Bay.
