Roy, as he was affectionately called by his family, will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joycelyn, her children Darren, Tami, Tonya, and grandson Tahkai; cousins, Clinton and Beverly Mattocks, Merle & Roy Higgins,Yvonne; The Webb Family: Audrey, Joy, Beverley, Freddie, Garfield, Ferdinand, Jr., Hope; The Lyons: Osmond, Godfrey, Barbara; Douglas Lynch, Douglas Parks, and a host of other beloved family members.
Roy hailed from the beautiful island of Jamaica, born in Kington to Rose and Noel Lawrence. During his childhood, he spent time with his grandmother in St. Ann, whom he visited frequently, and not only engaged with her, but also participated in classic childhood games and activities while fostering lifelong connections with his cousins, whom he loved dearly. Roy was a very caring person, and he personally took care of his mother, who fell ill, until her untimely passing.
In adulthood, he migrated to the United Kingdom for work, and then eventually moved to New York City where he worked in the mechanical department of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Upon his retirement from the MTA to Florida, and passing of his first wife, Gwen (whom he also personally took care of until her rest), he fell in love again, and married Joycelyn, and for the next 25 years, he lavished his love on her, and all of his family members.
Roy also loved reading the bible, singing hymns, listening to music, and watching westerns, and had a particular affinity for automobiles. Roy was also active in his local church as a deacon, and was always dependable, sharp,well-dressed, and supported Joycelyn in her various church ministries, including a Caring Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and Women’s Shelter. Roy was a wonderful son of God, always a perfect gentleman, and loved by all who met him. If we are faithful, we will meet Roy again on the ‘beautiful shore in that sweet by and by’!
