Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of Thomas Robert Dowling Sr. and Hazel Dowling. He served 18 years in the Army and later served 9 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1990.
He belonged to the American Legion, Moose Club, and VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughters: Cathy Paynter, Kristin Pettibone, Sandra Dowling, Kerrie Bennett, Kimberly Pettibone; his five stepdaughters: Michelle Starr, Christine Peters, Jackie Dunn, Valerie Hull, Lisa Braun; and his stepson, Jason Waldo. He is predeceased by his son, Thomas Robert Dowling III.
A private memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date.
