Jimmie Jewel Alexander was born on February 1, 1934, in Jefferson, Texas, to Jim and Ruth (née Brittan) Veal. She was the seventh in a family of eleven children: Edward LaGrone, Frank LaGrone, Mabel Lincoln, Katie Matthews, Dolly Franklin, Ruby Warren, Johnny Veal, Clarence Veal, Charles Veal, and Annie Frazier — all of whom preceded her in death.
After graduating high school, Jimmie moved to California to study nursing. It was there she found love when she met Nimrod “Nim” Alexander. They were married on January 19, 1959. From this union they had two daughters, Cassandra and Sharon Alexander, who she leaves behind, along with two grandchildren — Monique Jerricks and Adrian McWhinney — and a host of nieces and nephews. She laid her husband to rest on October 5, 1975.
She was a hard worker who devoted many years to the Veterans Administration, where she worked for 27 years and received multiple commendations for her exemplary performance before retiring in 2001.
Jimmie was a woman of deep Christian faith, infinite kindness, and remarkable strength that belied her tiny stature. She held so many wonderful qualities: cleverness, warmth, humor, and a beautiful smile that touched the hearts of all who loved her. She was the most wonderful set of contradictions — shy yet brave, sweet and fiery, faithful and open-minded. Her dignity, playfulness, and appetite for life brought joy to those around her. Above all else, she was a fighter who defended those she loved with a ferocity you would never suspect at first glance.
Her fierce love and unerring devotion to family made her the glue that held us together. Her empathy and easy laugh are gifts we will miss and cherish. She spent her life giving, working hard, and lifting others — especially her family. She was fond of animals, especially the family dog, Kayla, who proudly learned from her how to bark at strangers, and everything else. Jimmie always encouraged others to care for their community and use their voice. She found such delight in celebration — whether Christmas or family barbecues, her warm and gentle presence was always felt.
After a life well lived, she passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 26, 2025, at the age of ninety-one, surrounded by her loving family.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she laughs without fear of the future.” (Proverbs 31:25)
She has gone home to be with the Lord.
And as a proverb shared throughout the West African diaspora reminds us, a person is never truly gone as long as their name is spoken. We will speak her name with love and joy for all of our years.
She will be deeply missed.
