Cathy Was born into a military family at West Point, NY.and lived there up until 5th grade. She was an "army brat", living on bases in Ft. Bragg, NC. Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC, Panama, and Arizona. Her father, Lt. Col. John W. Black, bitterly retired after 19 years of service when a junior officer reported john's suspected deafness. He moved his family to Radnor, PA when he became a teacher at Valley Forge Military Academy.
Cathy graduated from Radnor High School in 1952 and played goalie on the Women's field hockey team that went undefeated and unscored upon that year. She was a member of the school choir, an editor of the school's year book, was active in the Oak Lane Theater and a member of the ST. Mary's Episcopal Church in Wayne. Cathy went on to graduate from Drexel University in 1956 where she majored in Home Economic and was a member of the delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority. She was named Drexel's Inter-Fraternity Sweetheart. She married her first husband, whom she met at Drexel,, Navy Air Force Captain James Clift, over their Christmas break senior year. Jim was a member on the NROTC program, a business administration major, and member of the Phi Kappa Phi fraternity. He resided in Springfield, PA (Delaware County).
Cathy and Jim were stationed in Palo Alto, CA where their son Jon was born in May of 1957. In January of 1958, Cathy was widowed when Jim was killed in action during a night-time flight maneuver. Cathy brought her son back to East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, where Jim's family still lived, and returned to Drexel University to earn her Master's Degree.
One of Cathy's best friends during high school was Ann Miller McCahan from Wayne. During her senior year, Cathy had been on one date with Ann's older brother, Ted Miller, a recent graduate of Dickson College, but according to cathy, "the two hated each other." Ted thought Cathy was "a brat" and Cathy thought Ted was "an Octopus." However, it just so happened that Ted's parents, Ethel and Theodore Miller, were friends with Cathy's deceased husband's parents. Cathy and Ted, both now more mature, were re-introduced. Their first "post-widow" date was at victor's Opera Restaurant in Philadelphia. Three months later, in December of 1959, Ted proposed, and three months after that, Ted and Cathy were married at Norwich University in Vermont, where Cathy's father was a math professor. They drove to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for their Honeymoon.
Ted and Cathy started their lives together in Audubon, PA but nine years later moved to Wayne where they lived up until her death.
Cathy was a beautiful woman who loved her family, her friends and her country. She was a member of the DAR, a member of Wayne Presbyterian Church, a past member of the Methacton Theater Group, had assisted Brownie and Girl Scouts in attaining their cooking and sewing badges, and was past-President of the Colonial Village Women's Club. She was a stay-at-home mom for her four children but later became Ted's office administrator for his insurance and financial services agency. She loved entertaining, cooking, playing bridge, gardening, sewing, knitting and dancing to Big Band music.
Cathy's fondest memories came from traveling, especially when she and Ted trekked and camped across country and back in a Volkswagen Bus with all four kids ages 2, 4, 7, and 11. She loved attending Ted's Franklin Like Insurance Company Conventions and being "a good Franklin wife."
