Joseph Holcombe Paist Young passed away peacefully December 16, 2016 at his home in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on September 29, 1925 in Wayne, Pennsylvania, to Walter and A. Virginia (Stevens) Young. He was a graduate of Radnor High School and a long time resident of Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Joe served honorably in the United States Navy during WWII and was stationed on the USS Melville. Following his return to the states, he attended Temple University and majored in business. He joined his brother, Walter, in making reproduction antique furniture at Hershey Mill. He then went to work at Wayne Ironworks, eventually working for National Foam where he was Vice President of Manufacturing, retiring in 1989.
Community service was very important to Joe. He was an active member of Paoli Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, and then joined Covenant Presbyterian Church. He belonged to Thomson Masonic Lodge # 340 and American Legion Post 646. He also worked and served for many years for the Mental Health Association, NAMI. Joe was a very committed and valuable member of the Upper Main Line Kiwanis Club for over 62 years, with almost perfect attendance. While he held many positions in Kiwanis including Lieutenant Governor, his true love was recruiting new members for the club. He received many awards in Kiwanis, one of them being the highest honor, the George F Hixson.
He was very funny, loving, and caring, and will be missed greatly by all who knew him. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Young. Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Lydia Young. He is also survived by his children, J. Andrew Young (Karen) of Pottstown, Pa., A. Virginia Taylor (Glenn) of Tampa, FL, and Linda Hughes of Paoli, Pa. He was dearly loved by his grandchildren, Josh, Kyle, Torrey, Christopher, and Jay. In addition, he is survived by his nieces, Gail McCahon and Dawn Parker.
A memorial service for Joe will be held on Saturday, February 18, at 11 AM by Pastor James Moyer at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 400 Lancaster Avenue, Malvern, Pennsylvania. A celebratory reception will be held at the church immediately following the service.
