Born and raised in Overbrook, her strong Italian roots remained a defining influence throughout her life.
A lifelong learner, Marian built a distinguished career in gerontology, the study of aging and the elderly, though for her, it was more a calling than a career. She dedicated her life’s work to empowering older adults to live fulfilling, meaningful lives until the very end.
Her career spanned decades, beginning at Devon Manor in Devon, continuing at The Quadrangle Retirement Community in Haverford, and culminating at The Sisters of St. Joseph Villa in Chestnut Hill. She was a compassionate listener who leaned into every conversation with empathy, humor, and a steady voice of reason.
Marian was also a natural mentor, endlessly generous with her time and wisdom. She could talk “shop” for hours if it meant helping someone navigate their own professional path or find renewed purpose in their work.
Her fierce love of learning and adventure took her across the globe. She traveled widely, eager to understand other cultures, people, and of course, their food! Marian approached life with curiosity, independence, and a deep appreciation for art, history, and the world around her.
Her educational journey began at The Convent of Sacred Heart in Overbrook and she graduated from Cabrini College in Radnor. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree from St. Joseph’s University, where she later taught master’s-level gerontology courses. Never one to stop learning, she also studied Italian and Art History, weaving her passions for heritage and creativity into her daily life.
Marian was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Benjamin DeVirgilis and Edith Palumbo DeVirgilis.
Marian is survived by her twin brother, John DeVirgilis (Donna). She was the loving mother to her daughters, Leigh Ann Keithley and Renie Allen, the adoring grandmother of Dominic Keithley, Teresa Keithley, and Autumn Pleau. She is also survived by her nephews J. DeVirgilis and Christopher DeVirgilis and her sister-in-Law, Rodie Alvaré-Henson.
Marian’s life was a blend of family, career, heritage, and travel, but at its core was her unwavering generosity. She was the kind of person who would literally give you the shirt off her back. Those who knew her will forever be inspired by her kind heart and steadfast spirit.
And of course, by her baked ziti and pizzelles. If you knew Marian, undoubtedly, she fed you.
Her generous nature and adventurous spirit will be sorely missed.
Family, friends, coworkers, and all those touched by Marian’s light are invited to celebrate her life on Tuesday, December 16th at St. Patrick’s Church (104 Channing Ave, in Malvern, PA).
Followed by a Celebration of Life reception at Avola Kitchen (625 North Morehall Rd, Malvern).
