Born in Glendale, California to Thomas and Louise O’Brien, she was the sixth of seven children. She grew up in Radnor, Pennsylvania and was the light in the life of everyone in her sphere of influence. Her family moved to California when she was in high school where she graduated from San Pedro High School, after which she completed an Associate’s Degree from Harbor College in California. She married Chris in 1980 and they raised four wonderful children in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Rita was an artist, talented in ceramics, painting, calligraphy, and guitar. She loved books and was a voracious reader.
Rita started her 26-year career at the Upper Main Line YMCA as a preschool teacher, advancing to Human Resources Administrator and Director. She appreciated the opportunity to hire and mentor countless young people and guide many in their careers. After 26 years at the YMCA, Rita recently retired to Cape May Court House, NJ, fulfilling a lifelong dream to retire near the water, where she enjoyed spending time with her family including copious time spent with her first grandchild, Serena.
Rita had incredible empathy and a deeply caring nature. All agreed she was one of the kindest, most understanding people to ever enter their lives. She was funny and authentic, and beloved by all who knew her. Rita was a loving wife and mother, patient listener, and reliable friend. She will be missed by many.
Rita is survived by her husband Christopher, son Christopher Jr. (Claudia), daughter Stephanie, son Sean (Christina), and granddaughter Serena. She was preceded in death by son Connor in 2025.
