I first met Don in January 1973, during my first teaching assignment at Ralston High School.  The two of us shared a "pod" with Jim Reiff.  A pod was a circular room sub-divided into 3 classrooms by bookcases.  Students in the back of the classroom heard all 3 teachers equally well.  It was a bad idea for many reasons  the domed roofs leaked from day 1 and the rooms without doors could not be locked, for example  but that was the setting in my first year of teaching.  I was 21, inexperienced, and scared to death that Jim or Don would notice all my mistakes.  Jim and Don showed me the ropes!!  As it happened, Don was responsible for my first evaluation.  Here's how it went.  For some reason, a formal observation had never taken place.  So the principal asked Don how I was doing.  Don simply said, "She seems to be doing all right."  And that is how it was recorded in my file.  (I've always been grateful for that!!)  Our lifelong connections had just begun.  We belonged to the same church where I sang beside Donna in the choir.  (How she loved the orchids from Kent on Mother's Day.)  I came to know Craig and Kent as my students (a privilege).  When my husband, Dave, had surgery for prostate cancer, Don was there to give him advice on the discomforts during recovery.  The words during the funeral rang true for me.  A man of few words, he showed that he cared through his actions.  Our annual Christmas greetings keep coming to mind.  Don, who talked little, sent a handwritten note each year with his Christmas card.   All the more a treasure.  I will miss these notes.  And I will miss the man who wrote them.

We received the sad news today that our friend Don has passed away.  We looked forward to seeing Don and his family yearly and came to appreciate his quick wit and his love for his family.  We watched the grandchildren grow (and grow) over the years and Don was always quick to pull out his photos if someone couldn't make the trip.  Rest in peace Don - we will miss you.

Candace said it so well. There was always that twinkle in his eye and that slight smile that appeared even when he was delivering a stern reprimand to one of so many students he shepherded through high school . You knew that behind those words his heart's purpose was to keep us safe and teach us to be good people. 
 You are all in our hearts today and in days to come.

Many good memories of "Mr. Fleming" as former Ralston HS assistant principal. One memory in particular stands out for me which included a detention for two days for not telling on two friends who left school to buy donuts during study hall. However, even though the punishment was given, I didn't have to serve the "time" because he let me go early. He had a cool smile and twinkle in his eye that betrayed the formidable surface. A man of good character for certain. My condolences to family and close friends.

My sincere condolences to the family of Don Fleming.  I will always have fond memories of Don when we attended National Conventions, Administrator Days, and Region II meetings together.  He was an outstanding educator and a very good friend.  He touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
