

Dr. Herbert L. Temple, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, died Friday May, 15. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Cordova, Tn., where the Temples resided for over 30 years. After his retirement as a Professor of Mathematics at Southwest Tennessee Community College, Dr. and Mrs. Temple moved to Ashland, Oregon. After living in Oregon for 15 years, the Temples relocated to Mt. Pleasant in 2020.
Dr. Temple graduated from Texarkana High School, and then received both his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees in Mathematics from Northwestern Louisiana University, where he met his future wife Rose Hibbard, to whom he was married for 67 years. In 1976 he graduated with a Doctorate in Education from Auburn University. Dr. Temple was a lifelong educator, teaching at Auburn University, Alexander City Community College (Ala.), the Tuskegee Institute, Southwest Tennessee Community College and Memphis State University.
Survivors include his wife Rose; his daughter Tracy Hunt and son Herb Temple Jr., of Mt. Pleasant, his daughter Gaye Ares of Cordova, Tenn; his brother William Temple of Vero Beach, Fla.; 5 grandchildren: Rebecca Ares of Crested Butte, Co., Nathan Ares of Lakeland, Tenn, Leslie Hunt of Southaven, Miss., Dr. Shelby Temple of Twain Harte, Ca., and Nic Temple of Portland, Or.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Temple was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Kathleen Temple, of Marshall, Texas and his lifelong friend John Nipper of Baton Rouge, La.
Dr. Temple loved planning and taking road trips and was still actively studying maps and planning trips when he passed away. He travelled to 48 states, spending time in numerous national parks. He and Rose also cruised the Greek Isles and attended the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany in 2000.
Dr. Temple was known as Pop or Papa Dud to his grandchildren.
Cremation was under the care and direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home.
