Ian is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vera; children, David (Sharon) of Nanaimo and Lauren (Rick) of Water Valley, Alberta; grandchildren, Christopher, Graham, Ian and Kelsey. He is also survived by his sisters, Jean (Brian) of England, Fay of Scotland and brother, Hugh of Ontario. Ian was predeceased by his parents Agnes and Archibald and his brother Jim.
Ian lived life fully and on his own terms, embracing his experiences with enthusiasm and appreciation. As a young man in Coventry, England, he enjoyed racing bicycles and motorcycles. All his endeavours in gardening, woodworking, automobile restoration or home renovation he tackled with his high level of perfection and planning, honed during his career as an apprentice at Triumph Motorcycles; as an engineer at Armstrong-Whitworth, Canadair, Northwest Industries, Curtiss-Hoover, Sheldon Manufacturing, and Exchanger Industries.
He enjoyed passing on his many skills to his grandchildren, be it golf tips, woodwork, fishing, bicycle repair or playing a great game of crib.
Ian was a character, as many of his friends and neighbours will attest. His sometimes stubborn and strong nature helped him through his biggest fight in his last year with dementia. When we think of him, we think of a life well lived, with humour and underneath a very caring nature.
"If there is another world, he lives in bliss.
If there is none, he made the best of this."
Robert Burns
A Celebration of Life will be held in Ian’s honour from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, December 6th at 442 Heather Place in Parksville. In lieu of flowers, by request, kindly make a donation to a charity of your choice in Ian's memory.
