It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Barbara Ellen Klaassen, who passed away peacefully at The Gardens of Qualicum Beach, on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the age of 73 after a long illness.
Barb (as she was known to the family) was born July 1, 1951, in Galt Ontario, Canada to Albert and Dorothea (Peggy) Klaassen. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1952 where Barbara and her siblings grew up. In 2011, Barbara moved to Parksville, British Columbia on Vancouver Island to take care of her aging parents and remained a resident of that community. She worked at Walmart in Nanaimo until her retirement in 2023 where she was one of the most popular cashiers, earning multiple employee awards and positive customer feedback.
Barb was a loving sister, always willing to lend a hand. Her witty humor and generous heart made her memorable and a favorite wherever she went. Despite facing many challenges in her life, Barb remained resilient and persevered through even the most difficult times.
She was an active member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Nanoose Bay. Barb was always ready to go for a walk and became a familiar figure in her neighborhood on her daily excursions!
Barbara is survived by her sister Susan (Ted) Miedzianowski, her brother James (Maggie) Klaassen, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and her close friends.
Her life will be remembered at a graveside service on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Nanoose Bay. Although she will be missed by those who love her, we know she is now at peace with her loved ones who have gone before and were waiting to welcome her home. May her memory be eternal and her soul rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to either Autism Speaks or The Alzheimer’s Association.
